Thanks for identifying that issue, Bob. I will check it out and see what needs to be done.

Quote from: Steve McDonald Formally known as Mcdonas on May 12, 2024, 08:34:40 AMthe screws and plastic inserts are original on 6S1431 and look like the ones in the photo, except mine are a lot more crusty looking
Simplicity and beauty of old technology in everything about these cars.  The new stuff might not age so well when computer components become obsolete and fail are no longer made.

Nothing inaccurate with your statement. Probably not one DMV in the US would have denied licensing the car. They all probably had headlight height requirements but the guy at DMV would leave the actual inspection/enforcement to the cop on the street. At a COCOA meeting a guy brought his MKII. A cop followed him into the parking lot. Of course he did a walk around and was going to write the guy for his "race car" not having a windshield wiper. Out from behind the seat the wiper came out with an explanation of how much Boeing charged for the 707(?) part and it was stored out of the sun to avoid rot.
The details are in the rule changes over the years. The MKIV started out as the "J car" because that is the spec they were building it to. After Miles was killed the final car was dubbed the MKIV just to continue the numbering scheme. The later ones should have been MKV and MKVI IMHO......
I really like the Superformance ones that have the Gulf livery.  Modeled after the 1968 1969 GT 40s.

Quote from: 98SVT - was 06GT on May 11, 2024, 09:14:05 PMThey look right at home. I had replaced them for awhile with AGT35OH personalized plates (someone else had the plate with the zero - I used an O and the shape of the letter was closer to the GT350 font on the stripes) (Jim Wicks bought those plates from me). If you move to CA you can run YOM (year of manufacture) plates on the car. You can use my address if you want to register it here.....
PS - you want the ocean on your right. San Diego is a lot better place to visit than San Francisco.

I still have fond memories of driving out to buy your car.  I had never been out to California before then.  Even during my law school days I had dreams of taking the California bar exam.  It never happened but still the state (politics aside) is beautiful in every way.  I plan to get 843 out to California if but once to drive the Pacific One.  I would trailer the car out.  The plan is not out of the realm of possibility.  You will have the opportunity to drive her again if/when that happens.

Quote from: 98SVT - was 06GT on May 10, 2024, 10:10:49 PMALL GT40s were "street" cars. By FIA regs they were streetable. The "road" option made the GT40 more comfortable for going to the grocery store. However the MKI and II did not pass US headlight laws so the MKIII (different MKI nose) was created.
It's not "amazing" that he has all the records. When Ford killed FAV John Wyer bought it. He created his Mirage using the original GT40 chassis with a different roof. He won LeMans in 68-9 with those and then took his Gulf sponsorship money and bought Porsches. The 917 became illegal and Wyer built his M6 for 72. After his GR8 car won LeMans in 1975 Wyer pulled out and Cluxton bought the place, cars/parts/paperwork etc.
Interesting history which I never knew. Thank you. I have some knowledge of the GT40 but only enough to get myself in trouble with inaccurate statements. This is why we have court reporters and and also automotive guys like, Bob Gaines, Speegle, S2MS, Shelby Doug and many others to keep the record straight. Thank you for that.

1966 Shelby GT350/GT350H / California dreamin'
May 11, 2024, 07:30:51 PM
I thought it highly appropriate if, but for a blip of time, to bolt on 843's original California license plate along with an aftermarket Hi-Performance Motors frame where the car was invoiced.  Drove around the area a bit imagining the Pacific Ocean to my left while headed in a northerly direction on the Pacific One. I can dream a bit.
Damn it I love this car!

Thanks for the information.

Finding space for the "viewing monitor" in small cars is always going to be the issue?

I'm trying to find the combination for my Pantera where the monitor is the rear view mirror and the screen is 100% of the mirror, not a 2" x 3" miniaturization? At this moment, that screen size is the limiting factor for me.

Technology marches on and probably it is just a matter of time before the right combination appears?

As far as the GT's being wrecked, I'd take an educated guess and say that the percentage of total wrecks is similar to the '60s wrecked Cobras, Corvettes and all other "performance" cars, not to mention motorcycles?

With vehicles of this performance magnitude it is just going to happen probably even to some "qualified drivers" but there are no drivers ratings like for aircraft. The qualification is just that you can afford to buy the car. The percentage of unqualified's now is probably comparable to the 1960's, just a larger base population to draw from?

A fair comparison might be the discussion about private persons being able to afford paying the $12-20 million to take a ride into space? The thought is that there are enough people that can afford that to create a waiting line?

When Ford decided to cross over into manufacturing "super cars" they understood that it was a different market and the customer's a  different customer. It wasn't a '65 Mustang "Secretaries car" market. While there is certainly "old money" in the world, a term that I remember was "nouveau riche" and the "spending orgy" that entails with it's onslaught initially?

"Captains of Industry" fit in there somewhere as well but it looks like they are more responsible? Maybe?

Doug, I believe there are mirrors out there that come on for the rear camera when backing then revert to a normal mirror while driving forward.

Great video. Just subscribed. Very clever to use your phone as the screen. Actually ingenious. Your GT looks hot in blue and white stripes.

My inner fender just had four small holes so they must've used plastic grommets. That must've taken one hell of a staple gun to get through that metal.

Concours Talk / License plate screws
May 10, 2024, 11:36:49 PM
Went to install the Hi-Performance Motors license plate frame on the back end of the 66 Hertz (car 843) and noted that they were actually small bolts and not long enough to accommodate both the license plate and the frame.  Any suggestions for bolt or screw length to accommodate the plate and frame?  Which is appropriate for back in the day?

Adding that rubberized square patch that sits on the inner fender apron to insulate the metal from the positive battery cable.

Oh wow!  It was released on his channel within hours before my posting giving me the impression that the buy was recent.  So it is a recycled episode.  Kind of like Graveyard Carz's modus operandi much to the annoyance of some of the fans.  Sorry about that.
