Ok, I need the back story on this one, as the picture is far more "modern" than the rest.

This is the 68 GT500KR - 4022 that I own. There are obvious items that need to be changed, fixed/replaced etc.  I am not sure about the rarity and or value of this particular build.  I bought from a good buddy as an investment and am interested in restoring this vehicle to "new" condition.  Whether that condition is Concours or near Concours I have yet to decide. Several questions I have,
1.  Is it worth a full "Concours" restoration?
2.  If so, who would everyone recommend for the project?

Thanks to all in advance!!!

1: As long as you are not looking to create a profit center out of the car, yes.

03278 KR convertible

Deceased/part out in upstate NY after an off road excursion in the 70's
Pre-internet, it took me several years to track down, finding owners of the fastback (two different VIN's to search, four states in total, again, pre-internet), and their stories, after finding the drivers door and dataplate on a spray can painted, red (original Burnt Amber), "A" code, 1967 Mustang fastback in a sparse small junkyard (less then 100 cars total) in a far northeast corner of upstate PA in 1992.
Very little of car left from what I was told, engine and transmission claimed by NY state trooper, body/chassis supposedly crushed after a few years being picked apart. Yet, all second hand information, years after the occurrence, I keep waiting for the car to come out of the woodwork, perhaps a mangled chassis in a barn, garage, warehouse, or show up as a "never restored" car covered in dust, but with plenty of aftermarket and non date coded chassis parts.

Bill

PS: Back when Shelbys started doubling in price, every few months, and the market was hot, hot, hot, I did have someone offer me four figures, for the door and associated, original dataplate that was in my possession. I had already reported the data to the appropriate SAAC registrar, and declined the offer. The door is no longer in my possession, having rotted away to not be worth moving, but the dataplate is.

1968 but maybe we should  do all

Since this is the 69/70 Shelby subforum, I left it as 69/70 Shelbys. But we could start a new thread in the 68 Shelby subforum, as there are some really interesting stories with some of the cars 04390 and 03278 as perfect examples.

If I remember correctly, the car was rolled back over, roof kicked/beaten upwards enough that the car was driven home by it's bruised owner. Now restored to it's former glory.

01>  Does SA build their own Cobra Bodies or are they using Superformance rolling Bodies for the Fiberglass Units?

While SPF South Africa is building the 427SC style cars, they are not using the typical SPF chassis (square tube), nor body, but instead using the SAI spec round tube chassis and SAI fiberglass body on a separate assembly line within the same complex.
The 289 roadster, and 289 FIA body styles, for both the SPF and SAI cars, are using the same Ross Henry designed fiberglass body and chassis assembly. There are minor trim and finish differences between the two, but not much else.

02>  How hard is the Roll Bar Hoop is to remove so it can be Re-Chromed?
Since you did not tells us which version you are working on (427SC vs forward style 289FIA, even though you asked about the Paxtons below, I'll respond for both), the 427SC will be less then two hours to remove, the FIA a few minutes longer as you may need to remove the lower seat pan to get access to the lock nuts under the car....Me personally, I prefer the non chrome version, as the car is what it is, adding chrome and polished engine parts are a waste of time and money. Get in, turn the key, and drive, that is what it as built for.

03>  How easy it to install Twin Super Chargers on the 427 Cobra?

Do you want them to fit under the hood? If so, then there will be a lot of custom fabrication involved, as there is no established kit out on the market.

The question not asked by you,but now by me to make you think really hard before you go down that road, do you really want them, if you plan to drive or trailer the car to anything but shows, I'd recommend leaving them off. Why, simple, 200hp at the rear wheels is enough to get you, the uninitiated owner in trouble, maybe even kill you. Having the sudden boost of power from twin Paxston superchargers will cause you to at the very least, soil yourself when you lose control of the car......Now, you might be saying to yourself "I know what I'm doing", but honestly, you don't, a Cobra, real or replica, is unlike any other car on the planet, short wheelbase, low weight, no power brakes, steering, or modern safety features......As others here can attest to, I've got over 120,000 miles behind the wheel of the ones that have graced my garage (SPF, ERA, Contemporary, Factory Five, Unique, and a shared Kirkham), big block, small block, turbo charged, supercharged, carb'd and fuel injected, mixed use, 80% street and 20% track. Even with that experience under my belt, I remind myself every time I get in, that the car will try to kill me as soon as turn the key. A very healthy dose of respect for the car, and what it is capable of is not a bad mindset.

Hope you find all of this helpful

25 or so years ago, on a similar set of barn find 69 Shelby rims, I purchased a small childrens plastic pool and several cases of Coke-a-cola, left each rim in the soda solution (large box of baking soda added to mix with 1 gallon of simple green) for 7 days (in the shade), then several rounds of commercial pressure washing, and they looked as close to new as they would ever get under my ownership (as clean as the bottom left picture above). The person I sold them to in Virginia may still has the car today, I will see if he can take a picture of them so I can post it here.

The convertible in Ohio that is linked to this cars comments does not have it's original engine installed. A request to see the VIN stamped in the block, and it's casting codes has not been responded to at this time.

Bill, PM sent

Appreciate the lead, found information on your one friends car, accidents happen, I'm sure there are dozens without any mention in the registry, after all, they were daily driven in most cases. He sold the car in 96, no new owner information showing in latest registry. The other last name you mentioned does not show up in the registry, although I'll start tracking that lead further since both cars may have been totaled back in the day. If I find anything of substance, I'll update the thread accordingly.

I think we can add 1968 #3900 to the list.

Its been chatted about frequently.

http://www.thecoralsnake.com/History19.html

I'd really like to keep this thread 69/70 specific, but yes, 3900 is the perfect example of what I was going for in the start of this thread.

Thanks,

This is a thread to track known salvaged, totaled, or lost (IE: stolen)  1969/1970 Shelbys, they could be, salvaged and rebuilt, totaled and rebuilt, or stolen, potentially built again as "air" cars that could be floating around.

Please keep the discussion in this thread about specific cars that are known to SAAC, and the SAAC forum:

We can start with the most recent that I know of, self reported by the owner at that time: 9F03R480135-lost to an unknown fuel, or electrical fire some time in late 2022 or early 2023.

Once again, please only post those that are documented, either from online salvage auctions, insurance databases, or other verified sources so as to not have people playing games for some nefarious reason.

Thanks in advance for getting the ball rolling on this.
