Quote from: Side-Oilers on March 18, 2023, 01:31:22 AMMy late 93 year old Uncle Larry was legally blind, but still had a license up until age 91
My mom was legally blind in one eye. She had to go to DMV every year to do the eye test and renew her license. One year the lady at the counter told her if she signed a form that stated she knew she was legally blind she could renew her license for 5 years. Gotta love CA. She passed away at 95 but hadn't driven for a couple years. She started driving at 14 and never had a ticket. She had 1 accident when she got rear ended in our 1955 2 door Plymouth station wagon - try to find one of those today.

That should teach him not to by an "Arrest Me Red" car. Everyone knows they look like they are going 20 mph faster than their actual speed.

Best of both world's a Scot from Antrim
this branch of Clan Donald who struggled to retain their place in Ireland just as their clansmen had struggled in Scotland. Clan Donald is usually thought of as a Scottish clan like the hundreds of others that gather along "clan row" at Highland Games all over the world. It is a Scottish clan, but Clan Donald also has an Irish history in Antrim

GT40 - Original/Mk V / Re: Aluminum Honeycomb

Yes - it's interesting stuff. Very experimental when the J Car crashed. Lots of different methods to fasten have been developed over the years. https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA305407.pdf  A friend built the BD-10 Jet prototypes in Nevada using this material. After the crash of the first Fox prototype they had another aeronautical engineer look at it https://biography.omicsonline.org/united-states-of-america/aerion-corporation/dr-richard-tracy-239318 On PJ-2 they changed the angle of the tails a couple degrees to reduce the stress and crossflow problems and that fixed it (they had done several test flights on the fix) . There had been comments that the honeycomb wasn't strong enough to handle the stress - due to the wrinkles on the first plane. It was a design problem not a material or build problem. My friend oversaw these builds too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LearAvia_Lear_Fan They were done with newer composites that testing showed would handle the stress but .gov wanted more "proof".
On the J chassis they added a steel roll cage and more mechanical fasteners. The original had been mainly epoxied together which at the time was a very delicate process requiring exact pressures and temps - almost lab conditions. I'm pretty sure the J car used all flat panels. Now you can even have curved panels made but it has mostly fallen to the wayside with the carbon composites being much cheaper to build stronger complex shapes with.

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: Z VIN prefix
March 15, 2023, 12:17:06 AM
Anyone with a 67 should be in the Google group - https://groups.google.com/g/shelbyresearch

The Z was not part of the VIN but an accounting method to keep track of cars built after the Ford take over of SA. Warranty claims on cars with a Z went to Ford and those without were charged against SA.

That is the current consenses - I wonder if anyone has come across any MSO (Mfg Statement of Origin) for the 67s and if any listed as Ford rather than SA as the manufacturer. The originals get surrendered to DMV when the car is first registered but sometimes you see copies listed in paperwork of auction cars.

Plenty of fine cars in California, thanks.Don't rust here like some other places too.... 8)
I think we have more classic car rust buckets here now than in the past. In the 70s to 90s CA cars pulled big money from people in the rust belt. Starting around 2000 classic cars in CA were being brought back. The only problem is most CA people had never seen or dealt with rust so they were happy to buy a 40,000 car for 30 grand not realizing it was bondo in the shape of the car they wanted and the rust repairs would drive the price beyond what the car was worth.

Let's get real here a reimagined Bullitt filmed in todays San Francisco by todays Hollywood. What are Frank's new pronouns or is he Francine? Which EVs are involved in the chase? Do the hitters crash into a Tesla quick charge station? And of course the guy who stole from the mob and killed the patsy's wife is released on $20 bail by the SF DA.
