About 25 years ago I had my original starter rebuilt in The Eaton Rapids/Lansing, Mich. area.  The rebuilder upgraded components.  It has worked flawlessly on my high compression side oiler.  Even when hot cranking for an extended period when flooded.

Now undertaking another build with need for an equal quality, OEM style starter.  Need not be concours. This is for an honest to God, doomsday vehicle to be operated in the most remote regions.  Is anyone left doing this caliber of work that has glowing references?

I have a guy that will put heavy duty windings in the starter for a extra charge. Quality typical rebuild components aside the heavy duty windings are  about the only thing that you can do with a stock starter to improve performance. I am glad you have not had any issues however the heavy duty windings although better do not significantly strengthen your starter over a stock starter from my experience of many done that way. Since you said need not be concours and given your description of use I would suggest instead to use one of the gear reduced starters available from Jegs,Summit and many others because they all require less amps but being gear reduced offer "tremendous" cranking power over a stock starter . That style of starter have been proven reliable by the use in modern vehicles and the after market alike.
