What's the name of that stuff you rub on exhaust manifolds to prevent rusting?

Like the title says, does anyone remember the name of that stuff you wipe on cast iron parts and exhaust manifolds to keep them from rusting? I'm doing a set, and I'd like to try it out instead of high heat paint that always flakes off after a while.

Sorry I don't remember the name but do remember that it was not a one time application. You had to rub the stuff on every so often. I think it had graphite in it. Given your screen name on a CJ you will not be able to get to very much surface to re treat once installed . The DIY high heat paints don't last as you say however the professional applied products do. Jet hot is the first thing that comes to mind but there are others. Part of the secret is baking the product on at like 4-600 degrees in large ovens designed for that to cure prior to the higher temps of the running exhaust. Most large cities have business's that do high temp process. I am fortunate to have a place near me. Others will have to send out. If you have to send out I and others have had great success with Jet Hot. I understand that they have various locations all over the US now. .

There are many testimonials on the internet on how easy to apply and well the exhaust manifolds look after application.  Here is just one of many testimonials talking about the short time left unattended the Calyx product lasts once applied. I sent the exhaust manifolds on my GT-E 427 to Jet Hot in Oklahoma City around 2005. They came back about three weeks later and I installed them. They still look great. It's been a while. The coating at that time was "Natural Cast Iron".

Unfortunately for me, I had a less than satisfactory experience with jet hot coating. In 2010 I drove to Pennsylvania with my Doug Thorley crossover headers for my station wagon to have them coated. They were used just like most exhaust manifolds would be used and I was told immediately that there is warranty for durability on used parts. I went for the $425 to have them coated anyway. The coating literally flaked off within 2 years! And this was less than 700 miles of Street driving! I've been spraying them with high heat paint every 2 years since because I'm not doing that coating again. Or did I just happen to get a bad job? Oh, and before the comments about the engine being run too lean causing higher exhaust temps, I always run my carb on the rich side and 36 degrees total timing. I'd rather burn a little more fuel than risk burning a piston.

I think your experience was caused by many factors. One you used headers instead of manifolds. Two you went to a subsidiary in another city - they may not have done the best job. It's hard to sandblast headers and get good results. Manifolds are a lot simpler.

I didn't make that clear. It was a Jet Hot dealer. I think they were in Downingtown Pa. So in your experience, The Jet Hot works better on cast iron than steel?

I can't say why you had your bad experience . Over the years I have tried various methods and hands down i got the best results with jet hot. Yes I think cast iron holds the process better. I have numerous friends including myself that did the jet hot on cast iron exhaust manifolds and had many years of maintenance free experience. As far as headers I can only talk from personal experience in that I had some done in white locally with a Cerakote applicator for my SC style CSX 4000 and they lasted 2 years. I then sent them to jet hot and 3 or 4 years later they still looked good when I sold the car. My headers were new when I had them done the first time. If you use something else I would be careful to manage your expectations .

You would think that sand blasting would give superior results because it gives more surface for the product to grip to. I thought that they even sandblasted new headers before application.

Any coating on headers you must assure that they are clinically clean, like ready to make an incision to operate on a human.

Even when new you have to wipe them down very good and once recieved by the cost8jg shop they have their own process.


On the calyx manifold dressing that's also an expensive process

For the best results, manifold should be removed, abrasive-blasted, and wiped down with PRE Painting Prep (10041Z) before applying.

 If you wish to apply Calyx while the manifolds remain installed on the engine, use a wire brush to remove surface rust and dirt, then wipe down with PRE.

Apply Calyx with a rag or toothbrush, and work it into the pores of the metal. For a buffed appearance, use a fingernail brush.

It's available on Amazon for $23.00. It's actually a set of 302 exhaust manifolds going on a 1976 Mustang II. I removed and glass beaded them. I'm going to give that stuff a try and I'll report on how well or not well it works.

I can understand now why you wouldn't want to go to the expense yet still want a good alternative. You should be able to get all over those exhaust manifolds once installed to touch up when the time comes unlike the CJ exhaust I assumed from your screen name it was.
