The story was viral already around 2007, but no real evidence presented. Rumours were around since the early 9oies, but may have been caused by "made up" stories from WB employees after the movie and early buyers believing in those fairy tales.
The auction was from 20th Century Fox, not WB. (Also mentioned in the registry)

Time will tell or may even see other "proofs", but the common sense was that the story was made up by WB employees with several cars, not only this 67 GT350. Actually another "WB sold McQueen car" - a DHG dark green 68 was sold to another auction buyer with certain documents signed by WB employees. It ended up in my neighbourhood and the owner (a rich factory owners son) threatened us, if we would ever put out any other truth. Later he stopped using that claim by himself. Never heard again of that car.

I am glad there are people around that go by evidence and not just blind trust

I don't have any issue with the story but having it being owned by the "studio" may suggest that it was more like a "loaner" to whoever wanted to use it.

There are more then a few celebrity Shelbys and it is as difficult to tie "Cosby's Cobra" to him since they were never owned directly by the stars.

There are a few others that I can think of in the same catagory. Most owned by one of their agencies. Amongst them are Howard Duff, Buster Crab and Rick Nelson.

Kind of like the McQueen owned Cobra, huh?

...and this is exactly why there is pushback when these stories appear.

Then people get upset, not realizing
its all rooted in money.

If McQueen drove it there would be a picture of him in it somewhere. Tourists were always thick around Hollyweird with their instamatics. I can't see a studio buying for him. By this time me had started his own production company. This was probably an executive pool car. Searching movies at the time you'll probably spot it parked or driven in a scene. It is a common scam to buy props for the a movie then sell (or give awaay) the stuff to the higher ups involved at a great discount. The Tag watches used in LeMans are a prime example. They bought 6 and then passed them out at the end of shooting as thank yous to cast and crew.

I looked it up in my registry & it does mention the Steve McQueen connection & also mentions there's no proof of it but still it would be cool ,i bet it's the only Shelby in the registry with his name attached to it or are there others ?

Still just an undocumented story. He is attached to a Cobra. But mostly due to CS telling someone to get it back from McQueen. Seems the extended test drive hadn't convinced him to get rid of his D Type or Ferrari in favor of a Cobra. The biggest hole in the GT500 story is the simple fact in 1967 they were filming Bullitt. The studio would have given him the hero car rather than spending money on a gift Shelby that they couldn't write off against a movie budget.

The McQueen family checked typically all cars out that come up with a McQueen name, especially when for sale. A faded blue metallic 69 blue 9R02M104817 was "claimed, advertised and announced to go to an US auction as McQueen driven car" until the commissioned dealer pulled it finally due to a lot of pressure. Maybe he just wanted attention, as no preps had been made to reimport it in time.
The key claim was around a name of "Steve McQueen" put in a document, living in Madras, but a strange adress, which one could easily google. Could be still that more Steve McQueens were around those days.
More storylines were invented about how the name came on the document, yet, more proofs against it later turned up when checking the initial export route and presented docs at that time. As said the McQueen trust is closely following such claims with experts involved, when it comes to an official sale.

Difficult to tie Cosbys Cobra to him? It is literally called the Cosby Cobra in Shelby paperwork.

Shelby had a deal with a dealer to register cars in his name. These were all sold as being Carroll's personal car even though he probably never even saw the car much less drove it. Anything for a buck.
