Good afternoon all I'm dealing with a problem that I know you all can help me with, my car #0210 has the steel lined rear deck lid that was at some point repaired of some sorts by just using fiberglass strip cloth to bond the fiberglass to the steel lining. It looked very untidy so in the process of cleaning up I removed all the built up fiberglass cloth and revealed the 2 separate pieces. There is rust underneath when removed so I'm cleaning that up but how we're these 2 pieces bonded together and smoothed and blended for the correct finish? Here ia a picture and video to look at for reference. Can you help me out on repair recommendations for concours restored car? Thank you all in advance.

Here is the .heic photo from above saved as a .jpg  for those that can't view the .heic file type.

A common problem on the steel framed deck lids and hoods.

Note the "cloth: woven fiberglass in the exposed interior segments, can use cut strips of the same/similar around the perimeter after the rust is removed/stopped-treated/repairs are made. one solution that I did on the car I had.

See attached a couple types of fiberglass materials you can cut and use.  The cloth in the lower left corner is like the material in areas in the red highlighted areas on the underside of your deck lid.

Also, a metal frame hood that got some similar work around the perimeter.

I'm sure others can chime-in as well.

I would get some Hysol structural adhesive and bond the frame to the trunk skin.  After this has cured then I would proceede with the cut strips of fiber glass around the perimeter to give your tunklid the original fabricated look.

Make certain you locate he frame correctly so your trunk catch and latch will have alignment.

jeb67  just went thru this same issue you are having.... car # 273  rusted metal trunk lid frame... Only one way to do it correctly.... Split the frame from the fiberglass and we used a NOS trunk lid and split the skin off the frame... done exactly as it was done and rebonded everything fiberglassed everything...  we have 50-60 hours in it but it came out absolutely perfect and correct. Anything less is perfume on a pig. Just My 2 cents  If you contact me I can send you some pics and tricks on what and how we did what we needed to do. Ken 734.231.7634

Wait a minute. Also check the hood glass to metal underliner bond. Same thing happens to the early car hoods too.
