99% sure  that this is the same guy that bought a G from me when I was still >> John from Utah.
Blue car, silver bottom, 427 was out of the car, but was there and correct.
Was an automatic.
Purchased out of California in the mid 90's

Sounds like you are describing a GT-E Cougar.

They got the 427. No 427s in XR7-Gs. Any other engine tho, including Cobra Jets.

Mercury contracted with Shelby Automotive to handle G conversions and kept the GT-E Cougars in-house.

Cougars can be very confusing....

The rear valance exhaust tip surround was used on some of the very earliest produced 67 GT350's and repurposed for the 68 G . The exhaust tip was of course the same as 68 Shelby. It was interesting to hear Dan talk about adjustment . The tip was designed so that it would only go back so far because there was a stop made into the pipe it slid onto in the form of a size transition. It was designed so a monkey could install them because you slid the tips on the pipe and pushed them back as far as they went until they stopped and that was the adjustment . They should stick the same amount on both sides . Of course owners could make minor adjustments for perfection but I doubt AO Smith did. It was interesting to see the Shelby influence and the apparent side by side development of various parts like console etc. used on the 68 Shelby and same parts slightly differently finished used on the G car.The steering wheel wrap carried over to the 69/70 Shelby. I believe there is a difference between the XR7-G exhaust tips and the '68 Shelby tips.

As per our friend Scott Fuller, the chrome sections are the same but the G tips are longer (due to the longer wheel base of the Cougar?).

Would be interesting to take a close look at the very original G in Don's video. Wonder if the worker grabbed a Shelby tip and a Cougar tip and that is why one tip sticks out more than the other?

I think the G was same as GTE as far as tip attachment goes-from the factory, the tailpipe was straight cut and the tip was attached. There was a tailpipe hanger (" bracket and insulator") w/tailpipe hanger clamp and a pipe clamp for tip to pipe. The bracket and insulator mounted to rear rail-it was different then Mustang.

That makes sense because it is the only way I could think of once I saw the exhaust pictures .
