I'm painting my Highland green KR conv. shortly and I am not sure if it should have the pinch weld blacked out ?
Thanks,  Tom

It could be ether blacked out or not.I lost count of how many survivor paint of that color cars I have seen blacked out.  Technically the dark colors were not required to be blacked out however many times the assemblyline man blacked out every car regardless. It didn't need to be fixed if it was done so no harm no foul for the inspectors . If it were my car I would black it out because it makes the pinch weld disappear better IMO. Making the pinch weld disappear gives the car a better side profile look IMO.

Sure you know but just in case and for others, remember the paint from this process and overspray even further extended inward towards the drive line tunnel and especially onto surfaces that hung down even just a bit like the ribs of the floor pan, slight bend of the floor boards just inside the pinch weld, forward frame rails, rear frame rails behind the rear wheel wells and other areas.

What was the factory procedure for blackening the pinch weld with out over-spraying the rest of the rocker? Did they use some type of template to block the other areas when spraying the pinch weld?  Thank you.

No template, just sprayed on the pinch welds

I free hand it. Others use foam tap to produce a soft edge.

It appears when typically applied that there was no mask or template. Some like to back mask the edge to produce a softer straight edge.

Still not sure if the painting was done by a worker or when the body passed over a set of anchored spray nozzles from below that were triggered by the body dolly forward movement. In either cars, as mentioned, the edge is a soft one on the outer visible edge (rocker and quarter panel) from the forward edge, in the front wheel well (before the fender was installed) to the rear edge where the rear valance was pulled down at the very end.

Here are some examples from different parts of the results. Darker colors have so much less contrast so will be showing better choices to show the detail better.
