Is there a source for a correct or close to accurate gas cap for a '69?  My car has the filler neck vent but for some reason it has a vented cap.  Really don't want to see flames in the rearview mirror.

Unfortunately the non vented caps are extremely hard to find used. I am sure that they are out there somewhere but in all my many years of Shelby parts searching I have never seen a NOS non vented cap like what was used on the Shelby's so those are a unicorn. If you find new or used ones they are typically odd mfg versions different from what came on the cars back in the day. With all that said the non vented caps were also modified to non vented by dealers to satisfy the recall in conjunction with the filler neck vent tube according to the TSB. There is a raised area on the back side of the cap that doesn't allow it to seal all of the way and that is flattened out to render it non vented. If your cap is original it may already be modified. That is if accompanying a filler neck vent. The reality is that even if a un modified vented cap is used on a car with the filler neck vented properly there is no way that any back pressure could build up enough to force fumes out of the tiny vent in the vented cap. At least not in any significant amount.

FYI when too long of screws are used to hold your license plate on the contact damage mark to the fiberglass tail panel seen in the picture is the typical result.

The original not vented gas cap from the recall kit was a Fuller Emerson.
You would have better chance with the not vented service replacement cap that was available over the counter. It is under 70 part number I think it is D0AZ-9030-A if I am not wrong.

That is a common mistake to think that will work. The D0AZ-A cap is for 70 GT500 with California emissions. The 70 GT500 with CA emissions has a filler neck that necked down to a smaller diameter. The smaller diameter of the D0AZ-A cap will not fit a non emission filler neck. Given that the dealer vent recall documents explain how to modify the cap so that it could be utilize in the recall in lieu of the made for non vented cap, knowledgeable concours judges would be in error if they gave a deduction for one.

Special Ed

I had a few non vented original caps done back years ago but used them and sold the extras off quickly as they are VERY hard to find. I am working on  5 or so caps and will be done in 2 weeks or so.

Keep in mind that you can not use a non vented cap UNLESS you have the filler neck vent. Your car will stop running if you do. Your car needs air sucked in to displace the volume of gasoline being pumped to your engine. A non vented cap prevents air from going in or going out. The typical non vented cap when used is the same cap in the picture that was posted. As Ed would say when asked about sourcing any hard to find part with sarcasm "just go to the gas cap aisle at WalMart and pick one up". You will have to ask Ed the part Number of the pictured cap. As I have mentioned before once that you have gotten the filler neck vent it wasn't a problem regardless of if you used a vented cap, modified to non vent cap or the pictured non vented cap because fumes were vented away from the exhaust.
