1965 CAR CRAFT Photo

I recently had to repurchase another copy of the May 1965 issue of CAR CRAFT, because I had foolishly used scotch tape decades ago to fasten a continued column from another page onto a previous page of the article. But this time, with my non-hasty, older age eyes approach, I noted an inset photo in the Contents section that I had not previously noticed. Note the small inset photo on page 5 here, about the article on page 64. That photo is not used in the article in this May 1965 issue of CAR CRAFT ("A Two-Fisted Street Machine with Race Track Manners"). Mmmm - I had seen that photo before - but where?? So I went to my "SHELBY ARTICLES - RECENT" folder, and found it in the June 2010 issue of MUSCLE CAR REVIEW, in an article by Rick Kopec titled "The Birth of the G.T. 350." The caption on page 57 states "Testing the G.T.350 for Hot Rod magazine, 1965." But the only 1965 issue of HOT ROD that I know of that tested a G.T. 350 was the August issue, and this "dusty road" photo is not in that issue either. A different "dusty" photo is used in the Aug 1965 HOT ROD article, but it was taken at LAX.

So my question is - have you ever seen this exact "dusty road" photo in a period magazine?
 
If not, it is a 1965 photo that was not "featured" until 2010!!

All 3 were Petersen publications. 1,000s of unused photos are/were in the Petersen archives. Petersen generally had photographers shoot the cars and someone else write about them selecting photos they (or their editors) wanted to use from the files.

The off road "test" seems to have been shot by Petersen's Pat Brollier.

Thanks, yes, I have seen it in the Petersen Archives - I was just wondering if this one was ever used in a period (HOT ROD?) magazine article, as stated by the caption in Kopec's article:

It doesn't state that the image was used previously - only that it is a shot of the car being tested by Hot Rod in 1965 . That is a factual statement since the image is from the 1965 test.
I noticed it was shot on 120 film so there were probably 3-4 rolls shot (45-60 6x6 images). NOTE: Not all of the negatives have been scanned yet. If there are several similar images they only scan a couple so they can cover more subjects.
It was probably shot on one of the fire access roads in Griffith Park overlooking the San Fernando valley. They weren't locked off until the 70s.

All of those were shot at the airport by Eric Rickman who also wrote the article. He was one of the few who did both jobs well. Pat Brollier was a photog only. He may have been assigned to get some action shots and then they decided not to use them focusing on the build.
What was in their other titles? Sports Car Graphic?

I mentioned in my initial post at the start above ^^^ that that photo was not in the August 1965 HOT ROD, but Thanks again!

Also, I went thru the Contents page of EVERY month of 1965 HOT ROD at 99wspeedshop.com and did not see any mention of any GT350 articles except of course the ONE in the August issue. However, sometimes the name of an article in the Contents may not give away what it's actually about, so there's that too . . .

I looked at every page of the Hot Rod magazine for 65&66 and didn't see it but found some other cool things. The 2 shots of the white 121 Mustang are the same but one was in a 65 issue and the other one was in a 66 issue with different drivers attributed to them? Wonder which is right?

I like the shot of the Stroppe Mercury at Pikes Peak. Parnelli drove it to a win after crashing out in 1963 during qualifying.
Stroppe put together a great team. MacDonald ran second to Gurney at Riverside.

i dont know if the Pics are the same used on the CarCRAFT Issue,
but the Text is from the CarLIFE June Issue
it seems for the "Special Edition" the Pics and the Text was mixed.

Car Craft was a Petersen publication.
Car Life was a publication of Bond Publishing in Newport Beach.
There would have been no photo sharing between the two. Of course you have to realize that story writing was not to cut into lunch or bar time. A lot of the articles just copied what was said in the press releases. Those press releases also generally included some photos that editors could use if the photogs work was a little blurry after that 3 martini lunch.......
In the 80s we hit on a perfect way to get stuff about our car events in the local paper. You invite the guy to lunch pour a few drinks in him and offer a completed story. He gets a free meal puts his name on the article and all is well. CS struck upon this method 20+ years before we did.
