Kent,

The spacer that we fabricated was a DIY "afterhours" effort in a SEARS Auto Center.  The plan was to bend the tubing then weld the pieces, unfortunately SEARS didn't have the right size mandrel.  So, we went "basic" with a ladder style weldment of straight tubing.  Car sounded nice and performed while enough to chirp the tires and run 150+ MPH at Atlanta and Charlotte bank ovals.  Sorry, no pictures but check the attachment.

While I don't have the car anymore, the spacer is still in the car and functioning decades later.  Bill Collins is currently listing the car for a customer, beautiful Royal Maroon (sLime Gold repaint) 68 KR fastback.

Had a 68 KR with the 2 ΒΌ" original exhaust (h pipe, intermediate resonator pipes, and tail pipes) but without the transverse muffler which was replaced with a fabricated spacer made from exhaust tubing.  Ran many SAAC convention track events (road and high bank ovals).  Good performance and enjoyed the 150+ MPH on the ovals.  Low throaty exhaust tone was pleasant when idling or at speed.  Send a PM with an email address if you want a short video of sound.  Good luck

This may help:

Fluke IR temperature guns have different distance-to-spot (D:S) ratios depending on the model, ranging from 8:1 for general-purpose tools to 60:1 for high-temperature industrial units. A higher ratio allows for accurate measurements from further away, while lower ratios are designed for closer, smaller targets.
Common Fluke IR Gun Distance-to-Spot Ratios
Fluke 59 MAX: 8:1 (best for close-range, general maintenance).
Fluke 62 MAX: 10:1 (suitable for electrical panels and HVAC).
Fluke 64 MAX: 20:1 (offers better precision from a distance).
Fluke 566/568: 50:1 (ideal for higher, smaller targets).
Fluke 572-2: 60:1 (designed for long-distance, high-temperature industrial use).

The smaller the target, the closer you must be to ensure the sensor only reads the target, not the background.

As to our 68 Shelbys, should we conclude that either of the 2 folding designs presented for 68s could have delivered or just the AUSCO which is stated as being "mostly seen in Metuchen built cars in or around 1968?"

Tremendous effort in researching and publishing the jack handle data, appreciate the article and look forward to more.

In 1965 at Indy 500, Jim Clark took the checkered flag in the #82 Lotus-Ford Type 38.

Met Jeff at SAAC 7 in Great Gorge, talked about Panteras, and had many discussions thereafter.  Not enough words to express the loss to his family and the SAAC community.  God Speed

SAAC Forum Discussion Area / Car in House Fire
June 11, 2025, 06:40:11 AM
Saw this news report this morning about a deadly house fire in NJ.  The news footage included the front of the garage.  The chrome trim around the grille opening caught my attention but not sure what make it is.

Hey Coralsnake (Was your plate bracket installed?)

I owned 3860 decades ago and when purchased it was a very used street/drag strip car. Normal mods: scatter shield, P/S delete, Hurst shifter, Cragar wheels, smog delete, ram air cleaner delete, starter delay delete, aluminum intake manifold, replaced carb; BUT the front plate bracket was there as the car was originally sold in New Jersey. Hard to see in the before pictures and was not reinstalled afterwards. It also had the original spare tire.

Quick Rick story:

At Indy during SAAC19, Rick was there directing traffic (like he had nothing else to do) and I told him how much my kids enjoyed the lunch time parade laps on track days.  When I stated that my 20-month-old son fell asleep in his car seat during the lap, without hesitation Rick said, "must have been going too slow" and waived us on.  We still own that Shelby after 43+ years.

Thanks to Rick and Colleen, Joe
