News from HQ / Re: Checkered Flag - Dave Friedman
March 16, 2026, 12:39:05 PM
^^^ Great explanation JD.

Photographers were at the vanguard of protecting creator's rights. Before digital and the ability to make copies with the click of a mouse and send them via email, photographers could protect their negatives like they were their own babies.

Who owns what would normally be worked out in a business agreement before work began along with how the work could be used.

I would be fascinated to know if Dave had a contract and if so exactly what was spelled out in it.

A few examples of the ads KH ran in the car magazines like Hot Rod and Car Craft back-in-the-day.

You'll also notice other makes like Corvettes sporting Mag Stars in Goodyear advertisements.

I have always heard that the Gs came with the Sport Grip 500 steering wheel wraps but I can't say for sure that I have actually ever seen it spelled out in any of the documents I have.

It very well could be - I'd have to go back and double check.

The XR7-G Cougars got the steering wheel wrap. Having two Dan Gurney associated models at the same time is confusing but the wrap wasn't a part of the Dan Gurney Special package.

Here is a detail shot from a piece of dealer literature. This car is a prototype.

So cool that he got to continue his father's work and that their labors live on in cars like the Green Hornet.

R.I.P.

Thought I'd share this scan I made from an August 1968 edition of Autotopics magazine I had. It is from an article on women participating in rally events.

Can almost make out the license plate.

Also, you probably already know this but that dealership is still around - plus family members living in the northern VA area.

You could try reaching out to them.

Some incredible footage here.

Interesting that the BME Cougars have Magstars on at Tech. but then run Torque Thrusts during the race.

I believe there is a difference between the XR7-G exhaust tips and the '68 Shelby tips.

As per our friend Scott Fuller, the chrome sections are the same but the G tips are longer (due to the longer wheel base of the Cougar?).

Would be interesting to take a close look at the very original G in Don's video. Wonder if the worker grabbed a Shelby tip and a Cougar tip and that is why one tip sticks out more than the other?

Sounds like you are describing a GT-E Cougar.

They got the 427. No 427s in XR7-Gs. Any other engine tho, including Cobra Jets.

Mercury contracted with Shelby Automotive to handle G conversions and kept the GT-E Cougars in-house.

Cougars can be very confusing....

For those who may be interested, Don has come into possession of a very cool XR7-G Cougar, and has done a video going over some of the unique features of the G Cougars.
