I just don't get it, especially with a restored, clone car.  Is it an urban, status symbol, or inexperienced enthusiasts thinking these Falcon off-shoots harbor some sophisticated performance ability?
Not really a status symbol that I'm looking for.  After all, I have a red 68 GT500 convertible.  If I need exude my obviously superior taste in cars, I just take that car out for a drive and I get all the attention that one could ever ask for :)

I've been around the Shelby hobby long enough that I know my way around.  I don't think this car harbors some sophisticated performance ability.  If I wanted that I would buy a late model ready to race track car (2018 GT350R, Porsche GT3).  Besides, you know what they say "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow".

I am looking for a raw and visceral type of experience with my next car.  When I take my 68 GT500 out on the road, it's for a cruise and very little spirited driving. I don't want to take it to the track and chuck that big block around technical corners and besides, it's a convertible.

I definitely don't have the skill to facilitate a build.  In my neck of the woods it would take me years to figure out who is good and who to steer clear from when trying to determine the appropriate people to build me a nice street legal racer.  I may further investigate the possibility of a new build.  As you said, I will get exactly what I desire.

So here I am, searching for a car that is ready to go and this car checks off many box's.  I agree, $70k for this car "may" be too much but the Ford GT's that I have been looking at are quadruple the price so it's all relevant I suppose.

This car looks interesting except I'm not too wild about the color and the price appears more in line with what I feel like paying.

But hey, if anyone out there is willing to sell me a real 65R for a couple hundred thousand dollars, I am more than willing and able to step up to the plate ;D

Thanks for the update.  eBay experiences on both sides can be very challenging.  I've heard lots of stories, and many are quite difficult to believe.
Thanks Troy.  I don't know what to make of all of this.

I just received an email from the seller and he told me the car is sold.  Damn!!!! I thought a 65 R clone racer would be valued much lower than $65k.  Maybe I'm a dreamer.

Whatever, ....... I'm onto my next muse.  Who knows what that might be but it's out there somewhere and I'm on it.

Did it sell privately for $65K? If not, did the seller mention the final price?
No it did not sell.  I've talked with the owner of the car as well as the gentleman who is in charge of selling the car for the owner.

Here is what I was told:

- During the ebay auction a buyer approached them about ending the auction early and they agreed on a price.
- I was told the price that they agree on was in the low $70's.
- Ebay auction was ended and buyer sent a deposit.
- Buyer goes dark for a week or two and then reappears.
- Buyer couldn't come up with funds to complete the deal and asks for his deposit back.
- Sellers of the car refuse to give deposit back and they end their dealings with the initial buyer.
- Sellers of the car then approached the 2nd top bidder, after things fall apart, and the 2nd top bidder informs sellers he has already bought another car so he wasn't going to be a buyer.
- Sellers have decided to relist on Hemmings 2 days ago.

I spoke with the owner of the car yesterday for at least 1/2 an hour.  We had an excellent exchange and an in depth conversation about the car and some discussion of our life philosophies.   I believe he is a very honest guy.

I'm not sure where I stand on this car but I am not a buyer at the current Hemmings price or even at the low $70's price.  We'll see what happens I guess.

It's simply hard to believe that people will take the time and effort to fake an entire Shelby car and yet no one has the gumption to legitimately make a concourse correct Group 22 and Group 24 battery.

How about make an outer shell that sleeves over an existing battery (not just the top plate that we currently have).  It would simple be plastic with two connections to hook up outer shell + and - posts to the + and - battery posts hidden within that shell case.

With 3D printing these days, that's gotta be somewhat easy, right?

It sounds like a good job for you  ;)  Show us how it is done. I feel your frustration and all kidding aside once you check into this I think you you will find ( like dozens of investor others over the last at least 8 years or so have found out) that the mold process to make the case is the expensive part of the issue not the battery inside. What you are suggesting is the major stumbling block that keeps it from getting done . The people investing are looking for a return on their money and aren't doing it for "the love of the cars".  The 3 D printing would be a good alternative for limited quantities IMO but I think it is too optimistic to think that a large 3 D printed part like a battery box to be very cheap. This is a complicated subject otherwise it would have been already done. The who ever someone that tries had better have the money ,marketing skills and patience besides "gumption " to make the substantial investment pay off .  A viable injection mold along with selling enough units just to get back the initial investment are just a couple hurdles . There are others.
I know your right Bob.  I've been using the cheese ball top plate "look alike" to cover my modern batteries for years.
