I have used Boe-Shield on bare metal parts.  It coats them well, but requires maintenance. If your control arm ends are bare steel as assembly line, you can coat the ends, which will automatically cover the plugs.  You can use a flat clear coat that will last for a while depending on your driving habits, i.e. driving in the rain.

Oiled if anything originally. Today a protective oil would be suggested. Clear coat will not hold up any longer than the oils we use today, it will crack, yellow or allow for moisture to enter at the treads and creep under the clear creating rust

Boeshield is often the product of choice since its affordablp and widely available
