The Shelby American (Summer 2022)

hell they got around Ken Miles’ death. Today that would be a major deal. SAAC: Holman-Moody had a quonset hut filled with all of the “death cars” from racing: Fireball Roberts, Ken Miles, Walt Hansgen. They kept the wrecks there for legal purposes; in the event there was a negligence suit, the cars were evidence. When Ford got out of racing in 1970, those cars seemed to have disappeared. SERB: Some of them were already cut up. The J-1 car was sent back to Kar Kraft where it was disassembled to try to find out what broke. There wasn’t much left of those cars. Especially the Miles car. It broke in half and then it burned. SAAC: There’s a lot of history there and I’m not sure that it will ever all come out. You could cherry-pick pieces here and there, but we haven’t heard about anybody working on another ex- pansive book, like Leo Levine’s “Ford The Dust and The Glory.” There are so many intertwining facets that it would be almost impossible to get a handle on the whole thing. SERB: Our latest project is we’re cre- ating a timeline from sixty years ago. This month Shelby got the first Cobra down at Dean Moon’s. Last November, sixty years ago, he went to AC Cars. We’re putting together a little photo- graph record, pictures we have from that time frame and some details, and when we’re finished you’ll be able to plug in the date and it will tell you what happened on that day. This will coincide with Brooks Laudin’s articles in the museum’s newsletter. It’s spo- radic there in the beginning but once we get to, like August, and Shelby goes to Lance Reventlow’s place then we can really load it up with a lot of con- tent. Right now, 60 years ago, Shelby is having liquid lunches with the mag- azine guys, trying to get his Cobra on the cover of their magazines. SAAC: He was spending those single dollars he got from the people request- ing a brochure for his driving school. SERB: What a character. There was nobody else like him, that’s for sure.
