The Shelby American (Summer 2022)

The SHELBY AMERICAN Summer 2022 18 They claim that the original car was auc- tioned off for $1M but failed to include that 12 “Eleanor” cars were used in the filming, none of which was an actual Shelby. “Redline 7000” was on the list but they must have let someone’s 7 year-old kid write the caption because they have Steve McQueen driving the Coupe in the movie. No mention of the ‘65 GT350. We’d say “ you can’t make this stuff up, folks ” but ob- viously you can because someone did. This is the picture these pinheads used for “Bullitt.” Maybe they can be excused in that there are so few photos currently available of the green 1968 Mustang GT that McQueen drove in the film. Daquan included the Gulf GT40 in the list because it sold for $11M at auction. “ It was featured in the count- less scenes of race track footage during the 1971 film, LeMans. And the Mc- Queen connection certainly didn’t hurt the outrageous sale price. ” Actually, the only GT40 in “LeMans” was a cam- era car and it was never shown on screen. The car they are referring to, P/1075, won LeMans in 1968 and 1969. There was no McQueen connec- tion. The car brought that price be- cause it was a GT40 and was the only car to win LeMans two years in a row. By 1970, when the Porsche 917s were wearing Gulf colors, any GT40s racing were privateers. The 917K driven by McQueen in the 1971 movie “LeMans” had been hid- den away following the movie’s release and found, some two decades later, where it was auctioned off for $14M amid the pandemonium that accompa- nied anything that McQueen touched in auctions. As riddled as this website is with inaccuracies and outright mistakes, no one there, it seems, is capable of being the slightest bit embarrassed. Once posted, everything is forgotten, re- placed by the next piece of drivel. We remember when things were different. Neil Pert’s “Silver Surfer” Collection Sold in Monterey Neil Pert of the rock group Rush, often described as one of the best rock drummers of all time, passed away in January of 2022 from brain cancer. He was a gearhead whose collection in- cluded seven classic sports cars, six of them silver, that he referred to as his “silver surfers” because he often drove them along the California coast. He thought the blue Pacific complimented their silver color. The cars were auctioned separately during the August 2022’s Monterey Car Week at the Gooding and Co. auc- tion, bringing a total of $3.9 million. Only one car, a ‘64 Aston Martin, failed to meet the reserve and was unsold. Pert’s Cobra, CSX2334, the only non- silver car in his collection, sold for $1,160,000. He often said the Cobra was his favorite car of them all. He was 67 when he passed.
