The Shelby American (Fall 2021)

In the middle of June the rally left Hunt Valley and headed up Old York Road, down Phoenix Road, through My Ladies Manor to Jarrettsville with a rest room stop High’s gas station at Bushs Corner. Then through Nor- risville, in to Stewartstown and stop- ping at a huge Rutter’s service center. It was like a mini car show. They have a restored train station with steam- powered locomotives. It’s right next to the Watering Hole Grill for lunch. In the middle of July the rally left Hunt Valley with 16 cars and went through a lot of small towns, stopping at a 7-11 for a rest room stop and up Rt. 140 with a quicker pace. Another stop at a Jiffy Mart, through Pleasant Valley, then down Rt. 97 to the Mary- land Mallet seafood house. The end of August rally left Hunt Valley, went across Graystone Road to Fawn Grove and stopped at a huge Rutter’s service center. While pulling in we caught up to a twenty-car Porsche club tour; with our group of 18 it pretty well filled the place up. The main attraction was the mile-long line at the men’s rest room. Next we headed to the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station on the Susquehanna River then to the Delta Family Restaurant. The mid-September rally left Hunt Valley and went up Falls Road with 16 cars. We stopped at Roy Rogers in Westminster to pick up more cars, and headed through Frizzellburg to Key- mar for a rest room stop, through a de- tour on to Thurmont. We did a tour through the three covered bridges and then had lunch at the Mountain Gate Restaurant. The end of September rally left Hunt Valley and headed up Falls Road through Butler and Lineboro and Jef- ferson towards York, Pennsylvania. We passed the old York US 30 Drag Strip, the site of the first Super Stock Na- tionals 1965. They pioneered the first four-abreast drag racing. It closed in 1979 but still exist as Thomasville Re- gional Airport. Then we motored to Johnny's Raceway Eatery. The middle of October rally left Hunt Valley over to Belair and crossed the Conowingo Dam that houses the Hydro-E-Lectric generators. After a rest room stop Wawa in Darlington we passed Landhope Farms, then to Mor- gantown, Pennsylvania to the Classic Auto Mall that hosts 1,000 cars on consignment. Everyone was on their own for lunch. For the end of October rally we left Hunt Valley with seven cars. The first stop was Roy Rogers in Westminster, where we picked up another sixteen cars, with a total of 31 people because we had eight wives riding shotgun. We went through NewWindsor and Union Bridge, a rest room stop at Woodsboro, through a covered bridge, and on to Rt. 15 where we stopped at the Mountain- dale Truck Stop. Then it was a six-mile shot down Rt. 15 before we climbed up into Cunningham and the Catoctin State Parks for a one-hour tour to see the fall colors and towering water falls along with all the other fall-loving peo- ple. Then it was back down into the town of Thurmont. We stopped at a very active 1960’s Direct-To-You gas station. Inside was filled with May- berry RFD and Andy Griffith memora- bilia. Our lunch destination was the Mountain Gate Restaurant. Our final rally of the year was in early November after all the leaves had fallen. We left with fifteen cars and drove up through northern Mary- land, through Millers Station into Manchester for a rest room stop at a Sheetz service center. We then contin- ued into Pennsylvania, through Codorus Park and into Hanover to the Dutch Country Restaurant for lunch. Then our Governor shut everything down again. Most of our group got to go on several tours in such an isolated year. We are trying to keep the wheels turning on these old muscle cars but it’s really not about the car — the car is just a vehicle to meet the people. – JIMWALSH, your trail boss The SHELBY AMERICAN Fall 2021 87
