SAAC member Pete Disher singlehandedly pushed the 1968 factory engineering cars and Conelec fuel injection into Shelby con- sciousness. Only about two dozen of them were pressed into service by Shelby Automotive. A concours head judge, Disher also restored factory en- gineering car #101 and it promptly won a Gold Award at the MCACN show in Chicago in 2020. The car then went through the March ‘21 Barrett- Jackson auction in Scottsdale where it was purchased (at a record price) by Dave Riccitiello in Northern Califor- nia. Such a historical car certainly de- serves a place on the cover of The Shelby American . It’s currently one of only two ‘68s with operating Conelec fuel injection set-ups. And, oh yeah - he’s also a concours head judge and a ‘68 restoration maestro.Where did all this experience come from? You’ll have to read the interview to find out. GOLD STANDARD. 6 pages. In 1968 Shelby Automotive had a test fleet of almost two dozen factory engineering cars. They were used to evaluate su- percharging, fuel injection and other features with an eye to either making these components standard or optional on future models. After testing, the cars were returned to standard specifications and sold as used cars. Their history as engineering cars was forgotten, until factory documents were un- covered. One of these cars, #101, was recently restored and sold at auction.
