What wheels to use with 68 hubcaps?

Hey all.

My 68 GT500 currently is riding on repo 10 spoke wheels.  I've got a set of really nice hubcaps I'd like to get back onto my car and I'm wondering what rims I could use that would accommodate my hubcaps?

My car is a really nice driver so I don't know if I need date code correct original rims but I'd consider a set if I knew where to find them. It took me 15 years to get a really nice set of hubcaps so I'd like to get them back on my car. Any suggestions are appreciated.

They show up for sale on this forum every once in a while. The good news is you are looking for a set. I found it hard to get someone to sell just one rim. There were two sets for sale at all Ford Carlisle in June. Pay close attention to stamping details in the wheel identification thread referenced above.

One set was $1500 for 4, I think the other was $2000

Many years ago, coulda been in the SOA era, there was an article I read that recommended the use of Boss 302 base steel wheels. The ones that used the dog dish style hub caps. I presume they were recommended because they were plentiful with some guys replacing them as a day 2 change and offered a performance handling advantage.

Is there something special with the Boss 302 black steel wheels, i.e., width, offset, hub hole, construction that makes them desirable?

Are there unique(ish) markings on them as Pete describes for the '68 Shelby steel wheels?

Do these Boss 302 wheels carry premium because of desirability?

I presume that any '60s/'70s era plain steel wheel will accept '68 Shelby hubcaps. Correct?

The 70 B2 steel wheels were 15x7 & ofc, disk brake compatible. 69s only came with Magnums; painted or chrome.

There were quite a few out there as it was the standard offering in 2 version with hub caps/trim rings. Chrome Magnum 500s was the only factory option that year and the iconic design became the defacto "BOSS Wheel" upgrade from there forward.

The plain steel rims are fairly rare as most were discarded for the various Day 2 Alum options as well...

You would SAVE some $ by not hunting  down the special caps/covers/rings.
