BAT Description:

This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H was shipped new by Shelby American Inc. from their Los Angeles, California, facility in April 1966. The 289ci HiPo V8 was fitted with a Paxton supercharger and the car was refurbished under previous ownership before being acquired by the current owner in 2021. Finished in black with gold graphics, the car rides on 14″ Magnum 500 wheels and is equipped with power-assisted front disc brakes as well as a three-speed automatic transmission. Inside, black vinyl–trimmed seats are accompanied by latch-and-link front belts along with a simulated wood-rimmed steering wheel. This GT350H is now offered on dealer consignment in Arizona with a copy of a Shelby American Inc. delivery receipt and a South Carolina title.

Approximately 1,000 GT350H examples were produced as part of a partnership between Ford and the Hertz car rental company. This example was delivered new in Raven Black (A) and was repainted as part of the aforementioned refurbishment completed under previous ownership. The car wears gold over-the-top stripes and GT350H side stripes as well as a driver-side mirror, hood pins, and chrome bumpers.

Chrome-plated 14″ Magnum 500 wheels are mounted with Goodyear Blue Streak tires. GT350s were factory-equipped with Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes as well as larger rear drums than standard Mustangs.

The cabin features low-back bucket seats trimmed in black vinyl, which extends to the split rear bench as well as the door panels. A Carroll Shelby signature appears on the glovebox door, and further details include an AM radio, a heater, and latch-and-link front belts.

The simulated wood–rimmed tilt-away steering wheel is paired with a Cobra-branded shifter and frames a 140-mph speedometer flanked by gauges for fuel-level, oil-pressure, amperage, and coolant-temperature. A Cobra-branded 9k-rpm tachometer is mounted atop the dash, while a vacuum pressure gauge has been added below. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 150 of which have been added under current ownership.

Shelby modified the 289ci HiPo V8 with a cast-aluminum high-rise intake manifold for the four-barrel Holley carburetor as well as a baffled aluminum oil pan. This unit has been fitted with a Paxton supercharger and wears black-finished Cobra-branded valve covers.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a C4 three-speed automatic transmission. The dual exhaust system features tri-Y headers as well as an H-pipe.

A copy of a delivery receipt from Shelby American Inc. notes chassis SFM681678 as a black GT350 Hertz.

The current South Carolina title carries "Exempt" and "Antique" brands.

The Shelby name started to be used on the plenums approximately mid 1967.

Sold at the GAA Auction at Greensboro, N.C. in 2021. I have the Ford vin from the auction.

The auction did not say if the driveline was matching numbers. (need inspection to verify)

In the start up video, the narrator says that the car does have the "...original numbers matching 289..."  The VIN shown in the images lines up better with about 150 SAI car VIN's later or near 5400 Ford VIN's later, but still could be original.  However, another member here on the forum has what he believed to be the original VIN, which was consistent with other SAI VIN cars around it. We have the FORD VIN to 6S1677 and they are not close.  So this suggest any potential buyer need to further research the car.  As long as you know what you are buying and understand, all should be good.

Best of luck

If it's the car I think it was, she looks a lot better in the pictures, then she did in person.

Am I missing something? The BAT desciption states "equipped with power-assisted front disc brakes". That doesn't seem right and is not supported by the photos.

You guys are okay with the Ford VIN anomaly.  Interesting.  My fellow SAAC member and I think the block in the car is a "donor".  Potential buyers need to inspect the Ford VIN on the inner fenders to confirm a match or donor.  (Even if one character is hard to decipher, it should match whats on the engine, minus the one character.  This is discussed in the auction comments.)

Also, the auction description fails to mentions that the Ford VIN was verified by SAAC to be SAI built car.  I wonder why.  Usually these auctions like to get that out front, documentation the car is legit.  Buyer beware.  (There on comments on the auction about the missing SAAC letter and verification.)

Last, there is no information or evidence provided that the three speed C4 is a HiPo nor whether it is original to the car.

Best of luck

Cory

This is exactly what I have been thinking. How much do you think a non original hipo motor would affect the value?

The pictures show the vin number stamped on the block
