Trap door color on white interior?

My car did not have a metal trap door when I bought it.  I recently started looking to get a replacement and have ran into an issue.

I have white interior. The three surrounding pieces are white as well.  Yet everything I am reading says that these, as well as the trap door, should all be black, not white.

The pieces in my car are molded white, they are not painted.  They have ford part numbers on them.

Was there an option to have a white trap door and surround?

My gt500 is black jade / white interior (my car was unrestored when I purchased it) and The trap door was black. My friends 70 is the same.

Might help to know what car you are working on or when the car was really completed at Dearborn. May make a difference or not in the answer. We will never know with out that detail if there was some small change. Since this a a common Mustang also detail their are your fair share of examples when you include those cars in the research. This practice saved Ford money since they only had to stock red and charcoal trap doors, upper trim and corner pieces. Not sure which of these were painted at the car plant though possibly so.

It has not been unusual when the cars were repainted or "restored" for owners to change these panels to white since many people like that better or they were copying a different years white interior details - happens way more than it should IMHO. And for sure we can find really pretty "restored" examples on the web and in magazines with the panels painted white also because of this  ::)  You may also see on white interior fastbacks where they added or that is the only thing made by the suppliers, the read stripe added to the back section of the bucket seat like you do on Black interior fastbacks with that interior.

They were all molded out of the same material so they will all have that off white material. Even the charcoal painted ones will have the same finish on the back side visible (originally) from the trunk side looking forward.  Same engineer numbers also.

No - no option to choose the factory colors of the panels on 69 sportroofs with fold down in a sportroof/fastback

Here are some pictures from unrestored examples

Picture #1 and #4 though they look very close to one another they are different cars.

I'm looking for 9F02M480004. Have you seen it?

I assumed the trap door and surround were black to prevent glare. That's a lot of sun coming in through that back window! But I'm not basing that on anything, and it may not have anything to do with Ford's thinking.

Please post some pictures of your project!

Thanks!!  Not really a project, just correcting a few things.  Next item will be removing the black paint that someone put on the stock wheels to make them look like 500s ::) .  Then aligning the doors and windows.  Then ready for summer cruising!  Not sure how to post a pic here, but I bought it on BaT last year.  Lots of pics there.
