Was a maroon KR ever built?

Yes, there was a KR convertible and a GT350 fastback. I have to check to see if there were others...

Did the Convertible belong to one of Carroll Shelby's Wives?

Coralsnake

Three cars total, two above and one KR fastback.

Have not seen any evidence the convertible belonged to Shelbys wife and I have actually worked on the car.

Thats the convertible, no evidence Shelbys wife ever owned it. Its a story that has followed the car. Originally the story was "specially built for Shelby". So the story had to evolve when that was proven false. This car was purchased from dealer inventory. There was no special build

I owned the fastback for a bit. Stolen from the guy I sold it to after restoration.

I'd imagine the whole Shelby family was driving "demo" cars and the only time the Mrs would end up with a car in her name was when the divorce was final....

Well, like I stated previously there is no evidence of any of Shelbys seven wives owning the car. It was sold by Cate Ford to the original owner. Cate Ford was almost 400 miles from Los Angeles.

Until someone provides some proof of ownership connected to Shelby, I am going to say its just a story.

They should have built more of those! Thats a great color combination! Reminds me of the 2004 Thunderbird Merlot with light sand interior.

I never knew the maroon car was sold from Cate Ford.  I chased that car for a while and didn't hear it was going to Mecum, so I missed out.  I ended up with 0181, another Cate Ford car.  I wonder if they were on the lot at the same time. Probably not, since 0181 was sold to Haven leasing on 3/19/68.

The early history of the maroon convertible is; it was in Michigan for a short time as a Ford company car and then went to Cate Ford. Pretty sure Shelby or his wives didn't live in Michigan in 1968.

The car was at Cate in 1969 and the car was sold by Cate in August of 1970.

I'm not saying it wasn't driven by Mrs. Shelby, but the timeline makes it seem very unlikely. Especially since it was 400 miles from where Shelby was located. The " nail polish color " is a new wrinkle, I had not heard before.

Kind of like the guy that wanted to sell me a 1967 GT500 owned by Gus Grissom, the astronaut.  The car was built after he died.
