I flew down to Santiago Chile  with a buddy in the mid 1970's, 1976 I think.  with the intentions of hitchhiking back up the Andes to Colombia.  We got about 40 miles from the city center and were having some cervasas at hole in the wall outdoor bar when we spied a beat up '66 Mustang across the highway. One thing led to another and we bought the car for a few hundred dollars. It turned out to be a K code, bu we didn't even find that out until much later, but it was totally clapped out; dents in every body panel, trunk with a punched out lock and was held down bare wire. And the de rigor passenger door in a different color . The engine was still sounding good so we went for it.

My pal was zoned the whole time on mushrooms, so all the driving fell to me. The car ran perfectly despite the Radial changes in elevation, and never had any mechanical trouble other than about 30 flat tires.

I've got million stories about the trip, but they aren't car related..  This was about 10 years after the Mustang first came out, and we saw lots of them. They were the most common 1960's car that we saw,  and ALL of them were in better shape than the one we were driving. We didn't even know it was a K code until we were in a customs check at the Peruvian border. Most of the external K equiptment was long gone by the time we got the car.

I still have a few photos from the trip, but none of the car.  Compared to the other Mustangs we saw, it was not very photogenic. I'm lucky to have any photos, as documenting my life in photos  was a non-priority in the 1960's / 1970's.
