Okay
Two different bottoms of Cobra air cleaners.

The one on the right is an original

Why are the necks pointed in opposite directions?
What am I missing?

The elbows are swedged in place not cast into place consequently with a little effort they will move or twist. I would suggest a little of WD40 or comparable before trying to move. The one with gussets on the bottom side is die cast and was for the black wrinkle die cast lids the plain one is sand cast consequently mating with the sand cast lids.
