Stable is a good product and I use it for it's intended purpose which is eliminating moisture and stabilizing unused fuel in the gas tank. Stabil doesn't however raise the octane for those with higher compression engines that ping under load and do not want to retard timing drastically .

I used to take care of a large car collection. I rebuilt carburetors and blew out fuel lines for many years. Then Stabil came on the market and my boss says try it.

Bottom line Stabil only works for 12 months on the original tank of gas. After that you are pushing your luck and in my case I had to rebuild a whole lot more carbs and blow out a whole lot more fuel lines before I convinced the fellow that draining the gas was the easiest and cheapest solution to the problem.

Stor-N-Start is a marine grade gas stabilizer that is longer lasting.

Yeah, I would only be looking at Stabil marine for the moisture issue, nothing to do with octane.
I'm happy I currently have no pinging!

Quote from: SCOTTGTK on November 26, 2025, 04:19:57 PMGood day all, wondering if anyone has any pro's or con's about fuel "additives" for lead or performance etc? I have a 1965 K code that was rebuilt around 1993, carb was rebuilt couple years ago by Gottafish. I can get my hands on 92/93 octane, non ethanol and have been running a mix of that and premium 93 oct with ethanol as that's what the previous owner had been running.
As always, appreciate your opinions! Scott

One last thing if you decide to use octane booster, some of them leave a film on your spark plugs.

So in essence a shorter S.P. life span.

I can attest that Shell 93 OCTANE non-ETHANOL with the prescribed dose of STABIL will last for up to two years. On cars that are not driven enough to keep fresh gas in them, I drain the tanks every two years and put that gas in my newer, frequently used vehicles with no adverse effect.

Other than these few winter months (maryland) when it's in storage, I drive it weekly!
