Instead of sandpaper, perhaps 000 or 0000 steel wool?

This brings back a great memory! In 1967 was going from SanFrancisco to Lake Tahoe.Barely made it to Sacramento to fill up....about 110 miles, then stopped again before heading over the mountain. Was no 22 gallon option in those days! Perhaps if I didn't like the sound of the 2 fours opening up could have made it with one stop. A year latter took 4 stops with the Cobra, again loved the sound of the webers opening up!

Well, this will be a memory test! 1965 traded my '55 Ford at Williams Ford Daly City (?) for a 631/2 Falcon Sprint. Shelby parts were just coming into play. Upgraded the cam, heads and intake (2 barrel to 4) and "forgot" to tell friends. Did waken up the 260. Early '66 was driving down Market Street (SF) and noticed a silver Cobra on a used car lot. Traded the Falcon for it + ?. Hated the color....silver/red and had it painted red and dyed the interior black. The car had intermittent problems with the oil rod shaft snapping. Worked a swing shift in Emerville and at night drove back over the Bay Bridge. One night before the tunnel a GT 350 came along side. We were doing about 90-100 coming out of the tunnel with a CHP "watching". He got pulled over and CHP radioed ahead to pull me over at the 3 off ramp. Was time to move on as my license was on probation so I traded it in to S&C Ford for a '64 T Bird....Wrong! That lasted till about March of '67 and wanted to by the Cosby car at S&C but my dad wouldn't co sine. It was the the finance manager at S&C mentioned my dad & I had the same initials. He put me into a new GT 500 (#0962) with my dad signature. That was ok, but not a Cobra. Heard about one for sale and since I had no debt of record, bought CSX2192. Kept both till late '68 as I sold both to buy my first home in Lake Tahoe. Let someone assume the loan on the 500...not really mine and got $4000 for the Cobra. That was a lot of money then , but bought a new home by the Lake for $19,000. Ran out of sick leave within two months and moved there.
Fast forward. About 1994 was at Hot August Nights Auction and on Sunday morning a '69 GT350 comes up with no reserve. Bidding stck at $16,000.  Bought that (#0184) but caused alittle friction when I got home. Along the way thanks to the registry I found #0962 and tried to buy back. We agreed if I restored a 500 we would trade. Restored #0195 and won best in class at cool April nights next to #0962 but he changed his mine. Ended up selling that and bought '66 GT350 6s2055 as a dedicated track car. The best part of all this is now sharing this with my grandson. He loves the picture of me riding with Carroll at SAAC does Vegas which I won at the raffle! Thanks to the Registry found CSX2192 not because I new the vin, but because it was spotted with the CA plate XAW684 which sounded familiar. John Goodman now owns the car and it still has that plate 40+ years latter!

The car was "scary"! When Rich Mason owned it, along with Dragon Snake CSX2427, he let me drive the car at Sears & Thunderhill. It was more than scary and touchy! The slightest tap and it would break loose. Rich Mason was a true believer that "the cars were meant to be driven"!

CSX2196—-aka FlipTop

Also, if I'm looking at the picture right it has two 427's, the Tahoe boat was a single engine. Am I looking at the photo right?

That's does not look like the boat i raced at Lake Tahoe....then again I'm getting old and forgetful!

As Earl mentioned the Nor Cal SAAC does about 3-4 open track events per year! Sears, Thunderhill,Laguna. A typical weekend is around 400-500 plus lodging etc. Great events. The real reward is the time spent with others who share your passion for the cars....track time is just the icing for the weekend!
WARNING! After the first event or so it gets more expensive! Gotta have "sticky" tires, 350 HP just not enough, those stock springs and shocks just aren't right and car trailer just in case.....
Last of all, after awhile it gets harder to hide those must haves from the misses!

I have run Webers on two Shelby's, a Cobra and a '66 GT350. A few comments! First, while there is no problem in hood clearance as stated, performance is really dictated by other factors such as cam selection.Second, as mentioned tuning them is an art, with about hundreds of combinations. Imulsion tubes, idle jets and primary jets. I learned the best way....other than hoping for luck...is to make changes on a chassis dyno. Also, once set remember that change in elevation changes everything. I ran at Sears, Thunderhill, Fontana and Laguna with no changes. Rejetted for the Virginia City Hillclimb, 4000-6000'.Once you know the right combination changing takes about 15-20 min.
Nothing better than the sound of Webers opening up not to mention the WOW factor with the hood up!

Also, the car adds in the Tahoe Daley Tribune ran some great classifieds for Shelby Ford. About 15 years back was looking for an old article and came across them on microfilm!

The Sky Room was on US 50 between Ski Run Blvd. and Stateline. Believe the cross street was Wildwood & US 50. Wildwood and US 50 was subject to flooding with heavy rain and spring runoff from Heavenly Valley. During redevelopment believe the Sky Lounge and the restaurant next door, Two Guys From Italy were demolished and are now runoff/ retention ponds along with a memorial park for missing children. This was set up sometime later after Jacee Duggar's was kidnapped who some 20+ years later was rescued.
Am getting senile but pretty sure this is all correct.

I don't, but the name on the boat was El Cobra!

In 1968 I sold my Cobra..csx2192 & '67 gt500...0962 to by my first home in Tahoe. The Sky Terrace had quite a display of Carroll's trophy's. Also in the parking lot was his flat bottom boat. I actually raced it by chance in 1970 as I had a Sanger with a 427. Did win, but Carroll was not driving, and was lucky as I pulled a good start!

The body was really that bad! No way could that ever be salvaged. Not sure why or how the side pipes were not attached to the car at the warehouse. They were off to the side, but still under the tarp. I also remember that Tony did not die in the car but shortly after in the hospital. If he had been wearing a seat belt he would die in the car. He was thrown out. Again, that's how I remember it!

Just a follow thru....about 10-12 years back Cosby was in Sparks Nevada to help open a new restaurant for a friend and you could get your picture taken with him. I had his album 200mph that Carroll had signed and asked if he could sign it. His reply was he wasn't doing any autographs.
However he did sign the two girls pictures in line behind me! Aw, "carma"!
