Hey guys!

I bought 5S345 some time ago. The car is mostly unrestored and has a pretty interesting early history. In short, the car was delivered as a lemon to the first owner. Lots of mechanical issues far and above what were the typical issues often experienced in early 65 ownership. One of the many significant issues was a complaint that the the rear end of the car was very noisy. The first owner started complaining of the issues right when the car was delivered, he complained to the selling dealer (McCoy Ford in Anaheim) and received no help. He then complained to Shelby American and received no response.

As a last ditch effort, he wrote Henry Ford II and HF2 wrote him back in a letter which I still have. HF2 put the Los Angeles DSO on the case to investigate the selling dealership (they had also not performed any of the agreed upon terms of the car's sale when they sold him the car which included not striping the car when it was supposed to be included in the purchase) and he also cc'd Shelby American's Dante Cardone on the car's issues. This, obviously, led to Shelby American being more open to providing assistance  ;D

In the weeks that followed, McCoy Ford lost their Shelby American franchise.. the 3 65 GT350s they received in their first shipment would be the only SAI cars they ever sold.. and the car was sent to Mel Burns Ford where they striped the car but refused to cover any of the extensive mechanical issues with the car because they claimed that a car with the sort of issues it had could not have possibly been delivered in that condition.

As a result, the car was taken back to Shelby American under the care of Chuck Cantwell and Harry Neumann. Harry was Shelby American's head of Service and Warranty. They brought the back to the factory, sorted out the various issues, and redelivered the car to the first owner. After that, the original owner followed up in a glowing letter to HF2 about the great service he received at SAI.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When I bought the car, it had this carpeted package tray in it. Under that package tray it was packed with yellow foam similar to that which is seen under the package trays of carryover cars... except every spare square inch of space was packed to the gills with the foam.

When I first saw the tray carpeted, I knew I had seen something like this before but couldn't put my finger on where I saw it. Of course, as should be expected, when I have shown this tray to a lot of people, the gut reaction is that the carpeting was obviously put on by a prior owner. Fair assumption- it's obviously out of the ordinary.

But was it put in at the factory?

Have any of you ever seen a carpeted package tray like this in a 65 GT350 prior to restoration?

In my humble opinion, we as a hobby get jaded into thinking we have learned all there is to learn about these cars. There are so many instances that come to mind where owners are trying to justify something on their car as "factory" when it clearly is not. At the same time, I think it is also important to maintain an open mind towards the fact that there is probably still plenty left to be learned about the cars we all love.

What do you guys think? Have any of you seen cars with similarly carpeted package trays?

Kind regards,
Vern

Hey Guys,

The other day Bob Gaines was here at the shop looking at GT350 #390 and we got to talking about parts needed to an eventual restoration on the car. The car retains its original "early" style brushed door inserts but, as with most all cars with their inserts, they are not going to be nice enough to reuse during the restoration.

WHAT CARS USED THIS STYLE OF DOOR INSERT?

These inserts have long been regarded as the "early" style of insert. However, a fairly recent post on the Shelby Research Group Facebook page had around 40 responses and seems to indicate that the preponderance of cars up till mid production generally had this style of "early" insert. Contrary to popular belief, these are not something unique to nothing but the "earliest cars". There is a lot of debate about where the cutoff point for these is and whether the "later" version was sprinkled in here and there during early to mid production. I am not here making this post to adjudicate that but you all can feel free to debate back and forth here on the thread  :D my popcorn is popped and I am melting the butter as we speak!

During his visit, Bob explained to me that these earlier style brushed inserts were only reproduced in a small run by Burton Antique Auto Parts a few decades ago but that Burton was still the best supplier for the most correct appearing inserts... albeit what they currently sell are the "later" style. He encouraged me to give them a call regardless to get a set of those and at least ask about the early panels on the off chance they still had a set knocking around.

I called and here is what I found: Burton is now run by the daughter of Mr. Mort Burton... it is a real, small American business. They have a few guys in the shop and one guy in particular who makes these panels who is in his eighties and still going strong. This is the sort of business we should all feel good about supporting.

When I initially spoke to Mort's daughter, she agreed to take the pictures attached to this post to the gentleman who makes their inserts to inquire about the possibility of producing more of this style of insert. She called back the next day and said that they would be happy to do a slight modification to their tooling and produced a set for me but that they would really prefer to have more orders for the inserts so that the extra time spent was worth their while... which I think is more than reasonable.

My only question for them was "how many is too many?" and they said they would produce as many as I could find orders for... but that they didn't really want to produce them on a set by set basis over the years because of the complications of constantly changing the tooling. In addition, for reasons already posted above.. who knows how long a great company like Burton will even be making these panels. As time goes on, we are seeing less and less companies making a truly nice quality reproduction part.

Soooooooooooo... here's the details... the Price is $455/set plus shipping. This is the same price as they charge for their high quality "later" style inserts. I made two phone calls yesterday and already have 8 sets spoken for.

IF YOU WANT A SET... you need to reach out to me at vestes85@gmail.com or through PM on this forum or PM on Facebook. I need a name and an email to put together a final tally on the number of sets we'd like them to produce. I don't know how long I am going to plan to take names and emails before giving them the "go-ahead". Once I have what I think is a pretty decent pile of names and it feels like we have given everyone a chance to throw their hat in the ring, I'll share the list of names and emails with Burton and they will reach out to you to process your transaction and begin making our run of inserts.

Special Note: I know I'm a used car dealer and all... but I want to make clear that I am making approx $0 doing this. I'll be paying for my inserts just like all of you.. I am just thankful they are willing to make this additional run of them. Reason for saying that... accumulating this list and spearheading all this will take some time on my end. If you intend to be a PITA in any way, please feel free to not reach out... my day job compensates me for dealing with that sort of nonsense but when it comes to these inserts I am accepting no payment...therefore I am also not accepting any complaints  8)

Kind regards,
Vern

PS- shoutout to JD Kaltenbach for the nice example pictures attached!

I have a car which was owned by a person who was a very early member of COCOA... I was curious if anyone has or knows of copies of the club's earliest Newsletters that I could access to see if the original owner's name is mentioned in those newsletters?

I owned newsletters #1 and #2 back in 2012 which I obtained from one of the founding members of COCOA. I did not make copies back then, though, and the person who bought them has them buried away it seems.

Attached is a screenshot of those two newsletters... to be clear, Id be interested in either of these two newsletters but also any other newsletter or club correspondence from late 1965 to 1971.

As an aside, the history of COCOA has always been an interesting one as I feel most are not aware of the fact that the club was founded in conjunction with the factory. The original "clubhouse" for meetings was Hi-Performance Motors.

If anyone out there has any early newsletters, could you please reach out?

Thanks so much!
Vern

Howdy folks!- I have been posting the below post on various social media platforms for the last week.. figured I should spread the word through the forum as well!

Does anyone out there know where 1968 Shelby GT350 #2096 is?

Two weeks ago I purchased the original owners manual for the car..it was listed on eBay for 49 bucks.
These manuals are worth in excess of $500 but I want to make sure it gets back to the car it belongs to. The owner of the car can have it for what I stole it for. 😂

From what I understand, the car is one of the finest unrestored 68 GT350s out there. Original Candy Apple paint still looking good and extremely low mileage. God only knows how the manual was separated from the car.

The car was last sold by BroadArrow Group from the Jim Taylor collection in 2022.
https://www.broadarrowauctions.com/vehicles/tj22_086/1968-shelby-gt350-convertible

I will only deal directly with the owner of the car in getting it back to the car. Please feel free to share this post with your Shelby friends in the hopes that we can find the owner!

If you know the owner- pass this post along and PM me. Thanks!

Hey Guys,

Broadway stuff can be tough to find so posting this in the hopes that someone with a Broadway delivered car might like to have it. Broadway was KC's only Shelby dealer from 65-67...quite a few cars were delivered there although finding dealer emblems from them can be tough.  No affiliation with the seller..

Hey guys!

Just wanted to drop a wanted ad for the below parts as Charles and Nathan Turner are currently in the process of completing a preservation-style recommissioning of a very special 68 Shelby for me. The car is a factory Black/Black GT350 convertible with factory air and automatic transmission. The car is special because it has just come out of the ownership of its original owner. The ole girl has had a paint job but is otherwise mostly an unrestored car...really sweet, honest car. We are looking to clean the car up, rebuild the required systems, and add what original/used/nice parts we can find to match the originality and integrity of the car. If you have any of these parts in unrestored but presentable condition, we'd love the chance to put them on a worthy car!

Please PM me here on the forum or send me an email at vestes85@gmail.com if you have something!

Hey Guys,

Ive got a repop 65 steering wheel which will be going on a daily driver type car that I am currently building. Have any of you ever tried to add more dish to one of these wheels?

This particular steering wheel has more dish than a lot of the very flat reproductions out there but it still bothers me that it doesnt have the amount of dish that a real 65 wheel has.

Any general directions or suggestions are welcome!

Thanks!

Howdy folks!

Just wanted to alert the forum that a car which was once the topic of discussion for its own build thread is ending tomorrow on BringATrailer.com at absolutely NO RESERVE!

This car was a painstaking, high quality build which was completed with the best of everything...absolutely no expense was spared in the production of the car. In addition, while the components of the build are absolutely "second to none" the car still appropriately and respectfully pays hommage to the original Shelby GT350Rs which trounced the Corvettes in B/P SCCA racing in 1965-1967!

Climbed under a 66 which I will be restoring soon to check the Konis. Low and behold, this is on the passenger back side of the car...

I've passed these photos to a few people...haven't come across anyone anyone who has seen anything like it yet.

Figured it would be a fun exercise to throw it out on the forum and see what anyone else either knows or theorizes...

Vern
