2 friends of mine have looked at this car. It has been for sale a long time. Neither of them gave it much thought.

Ferraris? He could have said any brand ...

Yea, but this car (once again any brand) just needs a little work and is pretty cheap (for now).

That video should be required watching for new car enthusiasts.

Quote from: pchmotoho on July 31, 2025, 06:11:57 PMI too was curious about this question regarding 66 glass over metal hoods. Years ago one well known expert believed they should be black but he did say never say never. I later asked another expert and he said my original paint red car could definitely have red under the hood.

From looking at various pictures of original paint (supposedly) red 66s. I have seen more than a few hoods painted red underneath.

Sure you have but were any of those examples truly unrestored with original paint?  Since a fair number of these cars were getting repainted or touched up in the 70's older paint jobs can often look like original paint to some and for many owners a worn, possibly rusting in places bottom side looked much better matching the exterior color. Few cared about being original them. Just had to be fast and in most cases get attention. Just my experience given growing up around fast and hot rodded cars cars from day one.

We might even have examples from 66 of cars with the fiberglass & steel hoods from around the same time frame as your car that haven't been repainted.

Except for mine I have no idea if the others  were truly original paint, hence the "supposedly" in my original comment. My car was built in Feb 66.

I'm aware of the hood issues Shelby American had with the 66s. If you had to guess what would you say is the correct color under the hood for say a blue, red, or green 66?

Thanks

I was thinking about this earlier today....   Remember the days when we only heard about these amazing finds in Mustangs & Fords magazine in the "Rare Finds" section?   Maybe a couple 2"x2" photos and a few paragraphs....  Today we are spoiled with gobs of photos and video footage.

Is there a 65 GT350 that Craig doesn't know about?  Great video. Glad to see it that's it's getting restored.

Quote from: tesgt350 on May 28, 2025, 07:41:27 AMHave any of you ever had to file a Claim and if so, how were they to work with?  I recently had the chance to bring "LITTLE BIRD" back home.  A 1960 Thunderbird that I owned for about 8 Years working on it and sold it about 30 Years ago. It is about 3 feet shorter than Factory. I couldn't pass it up.

Had to file a claim with Hagerty once.  They were excellent.

Wouldn't surprise me if a few 70 model year cars were issued black plates as well. Anything can happen with the DMV. Many years ago I saw a 69 Mach 1, I ran the plate and it came back as a 70 Ford.  Thinking I made a mistake I ran it again, still returned to a 70 Ford yet this time I looked at the vin return and saw it indicated a 69.

Ended up talking to the guy and his family bought the car brand new and the DMV registered it as a 70.  The driver said his dad tried to get it corrected a few times early on but DMV wouldn't do it. His dad gave up trying to resolve the issue.

He said that every 5 years or so he would get stopped and he showed me a  registration from the early 70s with his dads name on it showing Model year 1970 with a 69 vin.  Id love to see the comments if that car ever ended up on BAT.

Quote from: 6s1640 on March 03, 2025, 04:17:10 PMIt interesting that the "H" is left off the fender striping.  I wonder why?

Cory
Back in the day the rental car stigma was a negative. It was not uncommon for some of the typical black cars which were so typically identified as Hertz rentals were painted white or other colors before or shortly after resale to try and disguise the heritage. Those same cars typically left the H off for those same repainted cars. Remember there was no way to tell if they were a X Hertz rental car until the later 1970's and even then only a small few were dialed in the SAAC registry to figure out the history of each. Of course a gold stripe hints of what it could be but back when owners personalize their Shelby to their own taste it wasn't given much of a second thought. This is especially true back when only the black cars were typically associated with Hertz and most enthusiasts were unaware that Hertz cars came in another color besides black. I am not saying it is for sure that is the case of the car that is the subject of this thread here but it certainly was for many other 66 GT350 X rental cars back in the day. Up until the late 80's the Hertz cars were considered the red haired stepchild of the 66 Shelby's and consequently sold for substantially less . Fast forward to today and the value is at least as much as a similar GT350 if not more in many cases.

Hi Bob,  Yes, agree with your assessment and have known this for sometime.  I just find it strange that in this modern era, where ex-rental SAI cars are now revered, that the missing "H" has not been put back.

Cory

The H was never there but like Bob G. said these were not gold striped cars and the ones Ive known about were white.

Some early ones never had an H on the fender stripes

800K will be very tough. 4 car garage would be a very very expensive house.  I am not to familiar with areas an hour or even more east of San Diego so perhaps you could find something that way.  A very nice condo in a desirable area in So Cal with its own attached garage starts around 750K

San Diego is awesome.  Ive been trying to move there for years but to get an equally priced home our property taxes would be comparable to the mortgage of a nice home in most places of the country. Ca is very nice but respecting your request (as well as forum rules) Ill leave it at that.
