Time for a quick follow-up:
1) I picked the original engine about a month ago. The owner at the time had removed it and replaced it with a 4.6L from a 2006 GT which had about 136,000 miles on it. It runs very well, but it's not the original. He was going to ship it but was having issues, so I picked it up when I had to make another trip to the area and just swung by on my way home.
2) The bad running issue turned out to be a failing fuel pump, not clogged catalytic converters. With a new pump, it runs extremely well. I have run into an issue with the fuel line connector on the top of the fuel pump. It appears the o-ring crumbled and fell out. Tried various ones that I had, but once I gave the engine any gas and then let it ga back to idle, the vacuum was just too much for the new o-ring. A new connector should be arriving any day and once that's replaced, it should be good to drive.
3) Once I got the original 4.6L on the engine stand and did an borescope look into the cylinders, we found rush on some of the cylinder walls. Only the driver side was exposed with the spark plugs holes being exposed to the elements. I was able to put EvapoRust in each cylinder and all the rust dissolved and a miracle happened: There was not pitting found on the cylinders at all. The walls are baby smooth with the crosshatching still visible. At this point, the engine appears to be resurrectable. I will complete the breakdown of the engine and send it to my machine shop guy who can get it cleaned up and ready to put back together with fresh pistons, rights, rods, valves, rockers and lifters. I'll also replace the pump with better version with the GT500 pickup tube as well as a fresh change, guides. Lastly, I will be replacing the camshafts. The passenger one was placed in the engine that's in the car now, so fresh ones would be best at this point.
I'll keep you updated as I move forward.
