IIRC, this is what my painter used to paint my car. Maybe others can validate these dimensions or provide a better diagram.

1967 Shelby GT350/500 / Re: Protective Wrap
April 09, 2025, 05:47:37 PM
I have Xpel on my 2019 GT350. It was applied shortly after I bought the car in 2019. We covered everything from the windshield forward. Behind that, we covered the A-pillars and applied film (5-7" wide) low along the doors, rear fenders and around the rear wheel wells. $3500. Installation took 4 days.

The only quality issue is 4 small places in the (busy) grill where the film has lifted. These are deep and tightly-shaped areas where it was apparently hard to get the film to stretch down into the curves. I notice them only when I wash the car.

There is a small air gap under the film where it is applied over the edges of the body-length stripe decals. The installer warned me about this during the quote. To describe the effect, I would say it looks like a thin, clear pin-stripe applied along the edge of the body stripes. I never notice it unless I look for it.

The car is used as a light-use daily driver, for long-distance road trips (Route 66, SAAC_43, High-Line Highway), Autocross and HPDE (1300 track miles so far).

I have one noticeable ding in the film on the hood from something heavy that a truck kicked-up in front of me. I'm unsure if the damage penetrated the film, so the paint might be OK. Interestingly, this film ding gets better and less-noticeable as time goes on. I've heard that Xpel film is somewhat self-healing with heat - like when sitting in the hot sun, so maybe I should take a heat-gun to it.

A review of my selected coverage areas (vs "Full" coverage quoted @ $5500):

* I have a few rock dings in the unprotected paint above the windshield. If I redid the application, I would apply a 4" strip of Xpel on the roof behind the glass.

* There are no dings on the unprotected upper doors, rear fenders, roof (except as stated above) or trunk lid.

* I think the areas that were covered gave me the best bang for the buck.

I agree with tesgt350 that there are many vehicles showing film aging symptoms. After nearly 6 years, I am fortunate to not be seeing any of that yet. I chose Xpel because my research showed it had the best reputation at the time.

I will not be surprised if my film eventually starts getting long in the tooth. If/When that happens, I'll probably have it removed and reapplied. I suspect I'd also need new stripe decals as the Xpel removal might shred them. That process would still be less expensive than a new paint job. In the meantime, it's been great to use this car as it was intended and still have few battle scars to show for it.

Overall, I'm very happy with it.

I have a '94 Branda catalog showing 10-spoke wheels.
Don't know if this helps, but was easy enough to do.

Quote from: BDT 739 on July 18, 2024, 07:12:58 PMYears ago, I took a young person visiting the United States from Austria on a eventful ride and he was almost speechless saying it was like a ride at six flags.
I have a similar story. Our company's Quality VP was visiting our off-site and needed a ride back to our main plant. I was heading that way and offered to take him. He'd immigrated from India about 15 years prior and in all that time had never experience a performance car.

We climbed into my '65 Mustang Fastback with a modified engine and soon got caught at a red light. We were waiting for a left turn in at this lightly traveled intersection. He noted the rumble from the Mustang's engine and asked, "What motor do you have in this?"

I replied, "It's a 289 V-8."

"289? What is that in liters?"

"About 5 liters"

His eyes widened. He said, "My car only has 1.6 liters! Is it fast?"

"Would you like me to show you?"

"Sure!"

The light turned green. I launched into a smokey power-drift around the corner, let it hook up and continued up to about 50 MPH. He was hanging on with a huge grin on his face. "That was like a carnival ride!"

2 months later, instead of a Toyota, he was driving a BMW M3 to work. I like to think I brought another one into the fold.

Quote from: Jim Herrud on April 08, 2024, 10:00:17 PMIs there a way on this forum to similarly view all latest posts?

This would be useful because at times, I quickly scan the new posts and then hit the "Mark All Read" button. Then afterwards, I realize there was a post that actually looked interesting and I would like to find that post again. I usually don't recall which sub-forum it was in. I wind up searching in various sub-forums to find it or searching the title as best I can remember it. "Viewing all latest posts" gives me the same post listing as the original "Unread" listing before I marked it read.

On the main forum page, scroll down to the bottom.  You'll see a section named Recent Posts, with the 15 most recent posts. If the one you are looking for is older than those 15, click on the words "Recent Posts", and you'll go to a new page with 100 recent posts, split across 10 pages.

Perfect! That's what I was missing. I hadn't thought of clicking on the "Recent Posts" heading.
Thx!

All Posts show by default.
At the upper left of Home Page, there is a link to only show Unread Posts.
I stated my question poorly. On many other forums, if I select "Mark All Read", and then press the button to request all Unread posts, I usually get a response which says:

"You have no unread posts. You may view all latest posts instead."

What's the difference between Mecum.com and Ontime.Mecum.com? My credentials for logging into Mecum.com didn't work for Ontime.Mecum.com.

At SAAC-46, I rented the garage next to the bay where the Blair family had Bill's car parked. He unfortunately was unable to attend due to health issues, but I met his lovely family.

I got a few shots of his car:

That's the Dan Guernsey car ;)

I literally laughed out loud! Glad I wasn't drinking my milk at the time.

Thx Coralsnake!

Congratulations on the retirement!

I pulled the trigger a bit over two years ago. Loving the new chapter.
Thx again for your help at SAAC-46. I wish you'd brought your car. Would have loved to see it!

Appeals / Re: Enclosed Car Trailer Minimum Length
March 06, 2022, 11:11:39 PM
Length: I'll concur that 20' would be the minimum usable length, but 22' or 24' is worth the extra cost and parking hassle.

I'll add a few more thoughts:

Tow Vehicle: Having a decent tow rig can make your experience effortless. I now have a '17 Ram 2500 diesel and it is much better than my old Suburban 2500 with a 454. I barely feel the trailer behind me, even in the mountains.

Brands: Featherlite and ATC have been mentioned as good choices and I agree. Does anybody have an "InTech" brand aluminum trailer? Back in 2018, I was leaning towards InTech when I found a good deal on my 24' ATC. InTech was reported to be founded by former-ATC personnel. I'm curious if they truly are on par with ATC and Featherlite as they seem. At that time, they were a tad less expensive than ATC.

Construction: Aluminum is considerably more expensive than steel, but the aluminum trailers hold their value better. Look at the list prices of used steel vs aluminum car haulers. When you figure in how much more you can get for the aluminum trailer when your done with it, I think that narrows the price differential a lot. Plus, you get to live with a nicer and lighter trailer while you're using it.

Winch: Loading a car into a trailer by yourself, especially a clutch-equipped one - under its own power - can be stressful. My '65 Mustang has quite a bit of room side-to-side, but my '19 GT350 has only 2" of clearance to the trailer fenders on each side. A winch is well worth the peace of mind. It makes loading a car by yourself a cinch (pun intended). Plus, it comes in really handy when your car isn't running or it blows up at a track day.  (Ask me how I know.)

Escape Door: Make sure you get a trailer escape door that allows you to completely open your car door over the trailer wheels. Many trailers have "escape doors", but their lower edge opening is too high to enable you to get the car door open. The ATC and other high-end brands have escape doors which provide an opening all the way to the floor of the trailer and also allow the removal of the wheel fender, so your car door only has to clear the trailer wheels. If you can't get your car door open with the car in the trailer, you'll still be doing the Bo & Luke Duke thing getting in and out of your car.

For me, the surprise equipment requirement at SAAC-46 was for "fire-resistant gloves".
I'd never seen that in my dozen or so track days. It might have been a Sonoma Raceway request rather than a SAAC mandate, but ask about this at Indy to be prepared.
