I am current owner of 285.  My understanding is that my car was originally an automatic as the first few non-carryover cars were Hertz prototypes for automatics.  Car currently has to-loader 4 speed.  Burgy owned my car in the 1970's and is the source of my information

as a legacy car manufacturer their fixed costs and pension/benefits costs kill the ability to make money on small cars. their margin is one of the smallest in the business.

all personal preference.  that is why so many cars exist from unrestored to new.  If you want fast go with new car.  much faster and more reliable.
