Is the serial number of the car stamped on the transmission?
Yes..
It's stamped at the top of the transmission...
Difficult to see with the transmission installed...
Right side or left side back or front ? Do you think a person could see it with a mirror & light or are they to faint to read?
Left side top flange. Sometimes tough to read partial vin.
also pretty small font...doubt you will see it, but then again, you never know...
From the sounds of it, they were stamped when the Trans was not in the Car, so, who stamped them, Ford or Shelby?

Ford stamped the vin # on trans and or engine . You would be hard pressed to see them even with one of the gooseneck remote cameras let alone a mirror and flash light. Shelby didn't have the engine out of the car.
+1 and the Metuchen plant was THE worst at stamping parts.
Usually you see the year, plant and consecutive unit numbers. I just picked up a rebuilt RUG-AE2 and the it reads F151009. No "9" in front of the F that I can see. Here is a pic of my original trans Vin in my GT350
