The year 1966 is considered by some the final year of "purist" Shelby Mustangs. While no big-blocks were offered yet, every GT350 built was a sports car that could easily be amateur raced, and this car, SFM6S1063, is special in many ways. With a comprehensive restoration finished five years ago by John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations, this car is believed to be the second of 33 non-Hertz car painted in Raven Black that year, a selection requested by buyers following the popularity of the Hertz rental-car program. Sold new by salesman and racing enthusiast Bill Kolb at White Plains Ford in White Plains, New York, the car is documented with an original handwritten sales receipt. Furthermore, it is noted to be the very first of a handful of 1966 Shelbys factory-equipped with the rare Detroit Locker rear axle according to the seller's research. Paired with the detailed Shelby Hi-Po 289/306 HP engine with its solid-lifter cam design, 4-barrel carburetor and the optional BorgWarner T-10 4-speed manual transmission, it meant this Shelby was ready for action. As noted, the car was special-ordered in Raven Black, and it also had the Lemans-stripe package deleted, leaving only the Shelby GT350 lower-body rocker stripes. It has the trademark Plexiglas rear-quarter windows, fiberglass hood scoop, GT350-logo gas-filler cap and the GT350 plate on the rear decklid. The interior has the Shelby deluxe touches as well, like a wood-rim steering wheel, dash-mounted tach, bucket seats, black-knob floor shifter and Carroll Shelby's signature on the glovebox. The 14x6-inch Magnum 500 wheels are magnesium gray and feature Shelby center caps, with the wheels wearing Goodyear Blue Streak rubber. With a known ownership history, this Raven Black beauty has been featured in multiple magazines and is from the collection of Mustang specialist Jim Wicks. Presenting a stellar but uncommon appearance for any 1966 example complete with a driveline ordered as strictly business, this Shelby GT350 is a rare piece of Shelby history.

A beautiful car, the estimate is probably close.

As far as I know, this was Larsen Ford. The Ford dealership in that location wasn't know as White Plains Ford until much later.

I wonder if listing it that way has some sort of significance that I'm not aware of?

I don't know John, we have all played this game before on here with 66s, and with one car the call was 250k tops and it went for 400k + :o

I say, 285k and the bid goes on....JMO

Yeah, I did a double-take on that too. On my second look I notice they are talking about the color.

"The 14x6-inch Magnum 500 wheels are magnesium gray"

Beautiful car! The Hagerty Valuation Tool says $275K for #1 Concours condition. If that's accurate I'd add some for the rare factory Detroit Locker and a little more for the rare and striking color scheme - black w/white side stripes & no top stripes. They don't mention if it still has it's original engine. If it does, then the listed estimate of $300K - $350K is probably spot on. If not, then maybe a little lower. I'd sure like to have it in my garage.

How many non carryover 1966s have sold for over 200k?

I dont follow 66 prices....

I guessed $285 for the last one and I was low. Colors affect the desirability. Black may bring more. Somewhere around $300 is a safe guess.

I follow 66 prices but don't keep data.

One of the 29 black non Hertz cars, (and non carryover) unrestored 21,000mile car sold in 2013 for 247k at Barrett Jackson

I might have been really tempted to take that.
But, as we all know, it is not 225 K that you get?

What percent sales fee will they deduct  ?
That s the real bottom line to the seller.

BTW, what percent do they currently charge the buyer ?
That is a bottom line too, correct ?

At Mecum Auctions, the seller is charged 10% commission for the sale (of the hammer price), and the buyer pays a 10% fee (of the hammer price) for the purchase.  However, it is not uncommon for Mecum to lower the seller's commission on the block (or off the block) to get a deal done.  And, at times, they will even lower the buyer's fee as well.

If the car hammered sold for $225K, the seller would net (barring any other arrangements) $202,500, and the buyer would pay $247,500.

Did anyone notice that on TV one of the Mecum commentators said this car has very rare magnesium and aluminum wheels? What a hoot! I can't remember the last time an early Shelby crossed the block that they didn't say something  incorrect in their verbal chatter about the car.

Oh well, still fun to watch.

Talking about car seller and buyers fees , memorabilia /road art fees are even more. How about 23% for Mecum and 7% for the state . That is the sellers fee . I am not so sure if it is that much for buyers premium but wouldn't be surprised if it was. It really adds up given some of the engine displays(several) hammered for and around the 180k range. Mecum sure came out on those sales .I heard of various crazy prices paid for memorabilia . Many items that typically sold in the hundreds were going in the thousands. I would venture to see more specialty memorabilia auctions being advertised after this.

For the road art buyer's fees I paid 23% plus 7% state sales tax.  If you bid online, then you have to pay a local packing company to box and ship the item to you.  I bought a poster, bid price at $30.00.  After fees it was $39.48 then after shipping and handling, tack on another $65.21.  The $30 purchase price grew to a total of $104.69.  Luckily, I am still happy with my purchase and experience.  Both Mecum and the shipping company are great to work with.  They like my money and yours too!   :)

That is a small item and peanuts compared to some of the items that sold, but a good example of how that initial bid price grows quickly!

Take it from me, Mecum will hardly budge on the seller fees. Maybe 8% aka the no reserve commission. That's after $1000 entry fee + shipping +
