I know we had a previous discussion on this....just found this picture of an unrestored saddle interior car

Well that explains why mine won't stay on without a wire tie. I will just get the correct tape for it. Thank you.

I'm surprised to find the Gaffers tape sticks better then duct tape.

You need an extra set of hands to hold that wire retainer in place or clamp it while you tape it.

The line worker who originally did it must have been a six handed monster is the only thing I can think of. If there was ever a need for a quick release steering wheel in a car, I'd vote this one.

I've heard it wasn't gaffer's tape, but more like the stuff used to wrap the end of hockey sticks?

It looks similar but I would have to tell you that the gaffers tape I've got is the same that's on the car.
The Hockey tape (which we have here too) is similar but not exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure Dead Nuts On has the correct tape.
