Great article Michael.  I'm sure SAAC could do a whole book on counterfeit cars.    Perhaps a new offering, "The Air Car Registry". :o

And, kudos to SAAC for being one of the first marque clubs to actively call out bogus/air cars!

Exactly, and lets not forget about the great Shelby "inspectors" that are on this site and we all can't forget the number of times that everybody recommends to get an expection before buying.

Problems arise when you call fake and owner says real and sues you for loss of value to his car. Lots of owners know their car is fake but won't cop to it because they don't want to take the pocketbook hit. I've heard there are at least 28 air Cobras built by one group of guys who had access to DMV records of totaled cars. The only way they got caught was one of those totaled Cobras was still sitting in the garage of the original owner waiting to be restored. Buyer of air car had his 427SC turned into a nice kit car complete with grinding marks where AC #s were ground off and a special construction tag and serial number was assigned. He lost between 150,000 and 200,000 on the deal in the late 1980s.
