Title: ORIGINAL 1966 Tach Spacers
Post by: SFM66H on January 21, 2019, 05:33:23 PM
I was going thru my stash today and rediscovered the original tach spacers that I took out of my GT 350H in 1976! Thought I would share them here for reference.

I had replaced them with longer ones because I didn't like how much the screws compressed the dash pad with them at this original length. They are CRS (steel) and appear like a phosphated dark gray now, but were likely black oxide coated back then.

It's a kick handling even small parts that you know were handled/installed at LAX in 1966!

Hi SFM66H,

Thank you for posting the image.  I can't remembered from the 1.0 forum.  Did we establish which grouping of 66 GT350's got these spacers?

Also, what was the best length of spacer that worked for your car?

Thanks

Cory

I thought that our thread on forum 1.0 established that early cars had no spacers? I know my car has a pretty crushed dash.
Others might have a better memory, I think Jeff posted plenty of pics of Early (<400 SA VIN cars) with crushed dashes)

Cheers

Cory,

I don't recall the specific grouping of car numbers from the pre-crash Forum 1.0, but 'early crush' vs 'mid-late spacers' does ring a bell.

Here are a couple examples of different severity of dash pad crush that I wanted to avoid, and note that both are early style tachs:

And below is the length that worked best for my mid-late series tach/car, 6S1615:

6S477 had/has the spacers from day 1. I pulled the padded dash in the late 70s ( for the first time)  as it had "waves"  near the windshield from "sunbathing" too much . They have a grey color to them as well. Went right back in . I have to change the dash pad out as it has cracked so I will give the spacers a close scrutiny then. The depression does not seem as deep as shown on the picture of 598 above.  My tach is angled toward the driver a bit more as well.

Also of interest is the water temp in the picture ( a bit on the hot side)
