Title: S&C Motors Inc. - AKA S&C Ford
Post by: 6s1640 on September 07, 2026, 11:42:27 PM
Hi all,

Attached are three S&C Ford license plate frame inserts.  I have tried searching the web for what year each version was used, but with no success.  Who has a idea when each version was used?  I believe they are listed in order, from oldest to later.

1) Red Text, two lines, in large plain text "S&C FORD", in much smaller text all caps "SAN FRANCISCO"
2) Blue Text, two lines large and fancier test "S&C FORD", second line "of San Francisco"
3) Red text for "S&C", Ford script in the blue oval, over the San Fransisco bridge with "SAN FRANCISCO" under the bridge place on a banner.  I have been told, this version is the early 1980's.

Also, does anyone know what year when S&C changed the marketing name from "S&C Motors Inc." to "S&C Ford"?  The internet says they did not change their official corporate name.

Last, there seam to be two versions of the "S&C Ford" license plate frame, one red and one blue (shown).  Is one earlier than the other?  Do you know the years?

Thanks

Cory

Thanks

Cory

Thanks

Hi Coralsnake,

I found your Internet webpage on S&C Motors and the history they had with Shelby American. I was hoping I would see some comments from you on the time period of each of these Licence Plate inserts.  Do you have any ideas on these inserts?

Thanks

Cory

Hi all,

If you have a Vintage photograph from S&C Motors that has one of these plate inserts on it, please share on this thread. That image might help establish a time period for these inserts.
Thank you
Cory

Paper or Plastic? Early ones were thin cardboard at some point they started making them on plastic.

The bottom design, if I recall correctly was a design that they used for a very long time and into the 80's? and possibly beyond. Not sure when it's use started.

I was born and raised in San Francisco and my family wound up buying 5 cars from S&C over the years.  The first was my parents new 1961 4-door Fairlane. It was a 292 Y=block with Fordomatic 2spd trans. Next was my very first car which was a used 1967 lime gold Mustang coupe with black vinyl top. I bought this with my own money in 1971.  It had the C-code 289, 3spd stick, and the deluxe brushed aluminum interior.  I had never seen that type of interior before!  My very patient mom sat with me in the car as I tried to master driving with a clutch!  My sister bought a new, and very anemic, Mustang II V8 with white interior.  My dad traded in the '61 and bought a new 1978 4-door Granada, same color as the '61.  Then it was my turn again.  I bought a lightly used Pinto but can't remember the vintage as I had several different ones over the years.  I still remember the name of the salesman that sold me my 1967.  It was Lee Grote.
Back to S&C Motors/Ford.  Several years ago I purchased some S&C postcards from Vern.  They are postmarked 1961-62.  They used S&C "Motors" at that time.  I have attached a photo.  I have a S&C letterhead around here somewhere sitting inside a parts catalog.  I just have to find it and will post info when I do.
