Which toploader 4 speed tranny (by code number) came on the 427 AC Cobra. I'm looking for the model years of 1966 and 1967. I found that the 1965 came with the HEH-BY, but cannot locate reference to the other years.

Thanks Dan. But I am more interested in what TAG code would be on the case of a 66, 67, or 68 427 car. As I mentioned according to David Kee's, the 65 tag would be HEH-BY. What would the other years show?

The only tag codes I know of were by inspection for unrestored nice cars, CSX3338, CSX3346, and CSX3288 as shown in my reply. I have the original hard copy purchase order list Shelby American used for 427 Cobra components, see the Ford engineering numbers in the post. To Shelby American 1965 Cobras were CSX2xxx cars sold after September 1, 1964. The CSX3xxx cars were mostly named 1966 Cobra or 1967 Cobra based more when they were sold than when completed. CSX3042 was remarked and titled as a 1967 model for example.
The transmissions in my post are what Shelby American purchased to use in street and competition "427 Cobras". I do not have a cross reference to 'tag' codes. The only letter I can read on CSX3173's original tag is the last one "Y"; a 1966 Cobra. To Shelby American there were just 1966 and 1967 model years for CSX3xxx cars.

Are there Ford records that indicate the components used to create each specific transmission assembly? The suffixes AA - AB - AC seem to indicate ratio changes. The C5ZR number should indicate which parts went into the assembly - would it show in a dealer parts catalog? It's a standard Ford part not Shelby specific. Did the 427 and 428 cars use the same trans?
According to David Kee, the HEH-BY was used on a 65 427, but he doesn't list the 66 and up trannys. I have a RUG-2AE available
Just to add: I think that the C5AR-7003-G, which seems might cross to a tag number of "HEH-R" and is also referenced as being originally intended for the 427 Galaxie is likely of the same makeup as the "HEH-BY" as the "street/production" 427 Cobra transmission (earlier cars). Whereas the C5ZR-7003-AA & AB & AC, are probably numbers for the "nonstandard" production examples intended solely for the racing programs. Among other changes made for competition usage the "AB" & "AC" units as listed above also are of nonstandard gear ratios. :)

Don't know Cobra transmissions but 427 Galaxies changed from 28 spline out in 65 to 31 spline out in 66

I had one out of a 427 Cobra. It was a 2.32 close ratio, 24" with big 1-3/8" input but 28 spline output. I found that a strange combination and I had no idea that combination even was ever made? Made no sense to me.
