Title: CSX4000 history
Post by: scg36 on June 18, 2026, 06:29:22 PM
Hello SAAC Forum,
I have been a SAAC member for 22 years.

I just purchased CSX4147, and could use some help on its history. It comes with the original statement of origin dated 1999. It also comes with the paperwork from NY where the engine was installed. Other than the gentleman I purchased from, and knowing it was in NY prior to his ownership, I was hoping to see if there
is any additional history.

I went to the cobra registry, and that did not have anything.

Appreciate the help.
Thanks, Sean

Originally delivered to Billy Andrews at HRE as what must only be described as a "pallet" car (my words, not located within the actual registry, but given the following information, once can surmise, I'll leave it at that) per the 4th edition of the World Registry of Cobras and GT40's (publishing date unknown), with the following deleted items noted:wheels, sidepipes, vinyl upholstery, and headers. Also uncertain if the fiberglass body was painted or not at that time.

This is the car with the 351W "stroked" to "427cid"
Appears to have bought and sold a number of times:
Discussion from the new in 2024 owner getting ready to sell his ERA:

Where he bought it on BAT:

Sold on Cobra country

Then sold to you on BAT just recently:

That is all I see in my records, club cobra is down, as it has been on and off (mostly off) for the last few years, so I cannot dig into any other posts there at this time.

Hope you find this helpful

Bill

Give Shelby Americans sales department a phone call and ask them to pull the paper build file, SAI can easily tell you if this continuation Cobra was sold as a roller or parts on multiple pallets to be assembled by a distributor or perhaps an the retail buyer/owner.

SAI can also provide you with how the Cobra was ordered option wise among other details. Now keep in mind that SAI will most likely NOT have any owner history but you never know unless you ask. I would also suggest asking for photocopies of any paperwork that is releasable, SAI does not appear to have a set policy on releasing paperwork so you will be at the mercey of whomever answers your phone call at SAI.

All the best with your research.

At the time this car was produced the laws were different. SA could not legally sell a completed running driving car as a 1965. Typically the cars were sold as rollers less running gear and delivered to the customer or a SA authorized assembler to finish. Today those rules have changed and SA can build 325 complete turn key cars per year.

Under the FAST Act, "low-volume" manufacturers can bypass certain heavy Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) to produce turn-key replicas of vehicles that are at least 25 years old.
Volume Limit: Capped at 325 of these replica vehicles per calendar year nationwide.
Emissions: Manufacturers must use engines and emission controls that have a valid EPA Certificate of Conformity for that model year.
Labeling: Vehicles must wear a permanent label indicating the safety standards from which they are exempt and the year they replicate.

It's unusual that the MSO still exists. They are to be surrendered to DMV when the car is first registered. They are the birth certificate and the title replaces them. Or is NY a non title state that only issues registration for older model year cars?

I guess the feds have finally settled the "continuation" question. New Cobras are replicas.......

NYS is registration only - no title, pre-1973.  Anything pre-73 there are a few ways to register without the MSO or old registration/paperwork.
