Hi All
So my 66 Shelby is leaking more than I can live with at the rear main seal time to change it.
This will be done in the car with the 2 pc seal has anyone had consistent good luck with a particular brand
of seal so I don't have to do it twice? I may look at the timing chain as well , the car has 48k original miles
and its probably still the original one. My question is did K codes come with the nylon clad cam gear? if so it probably will need replacing. its been quite a while since since I had my last K code apart.
Thanks much!
For the rear main seal, I used the FelPro and this video is a pretty good description of the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTLUDVGoLAQ
Not a bad video. The only part I don't agree with is the pin should be driven down flush. That pin is only used with the original rope seal. Some people remove the pin, but it's short enough that it can be driven in flush and not protrude into the pan gasket end seal. In my mind, removing the pin just gives you another chance for a leak.
Unless the crank is out, it's really difficult to deal with the locating pin. I know somebody is going to answer that they did it.
My 67 had the plastic-coated cam gear. I was glad to be rid of it.
The pin is only in the bearing cap, not in the block.
