Never thought about the signs after they take them down. Should go in the Ford museum or at least inside Ford HQ but will probably end up in someone's personal collection.

Corporate speak for our customers were outraged so we scrapped the idea - until next year......

As originally reported by Automotive News, these changes involved renaming Carroll Shelby Way (East and West) and several other streets in favor of something more current to the Blue Oval's portfolio. Now, however, Ford is claiming that the original plans shown to the media were not "finalized."

The developer that put housing and stores on the Russ Davis dealership in Covina showed some respect for it's previous life. Was Russ Davis ever a Shelby dealer? They focused on drag racing with Gas Ronda.

Clippinger Chevrolet across the street was the BIG SoCal Corvette hub. They were into everything. Mainly due to one salesman Bob Wingate.

Starting in 1956 as a salesman for Clippinger Chevrolet, in California, Wingate sold Corvettes and got involved in all kinds of Corvette activities from 1958-1974. In 1959, he created his first Corvette club at Clippinger and in 1966 was one of the founding fathers and first President of Western States Corvette Council, [WSCC]. Many Clubs from Canada to Mexico were created with Wingate's guidance. Autocross, slalom and road racing events were also a big part of the West Coast Corvette culture. Bob was a leader who helped mold the national SCCA rules for autocross and slalom racing. BOB also found and sold the three 1968 L-88 Corvettes to the JIM GARNER ''AIR'' RACING TEAM from Gledhill Chevrolet. In these Hi Performance days Wingate sold many Camaro's, Corvairs, and passenger cars with high performance engines and transmissions.

When I was in high school I did a work experience class at Clippinger. I worked with the trans/rearend guy. One time Bob came out to inspect a 396 Camaro we were working on. The kid's dad was complaining about this being the 3rd time the rearend failed and he was being denied warranty. The guy I was working with pointed out where the slicks had rubbed off the paint in the wheel wells. Bob then brought the dad out and handled the bad news with his customer personally. Not many salesmen would get involved at that level. BTW: Dad said the kid (who had been hiding the slicks at a friends) would be paying for the repairs himself.

They'd have to get rid of Triumph, Jaguar, Ferrari, Porsche, Duesenberg, Corvette and others too.

There is a neighborhood in Orange County where all the street names are English sports car manufacturers.

I wonder if it was a licensing dispute that has now been settled? It's not just "Shelby Way" but the trademarked "Carroll Shelby".

The name Carroll Shelby, along with "Shelby and related signatures, is heavily trademarked. Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. (CSL) manages these rights, which cover automobiles, apparel, and collectibles.

It means that a major commission revenue stream for Shelby Licensing and the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust has ended.  There are other sources such as the Shelby American shop and Shelby named merchandise, but this is a big one that is gone.
