Title: Fuel cell bladder
Post by: 6S896 on April 12, 2026, 07:54:36 PM
Hello everyone, hope you are well. Where would be a suggestion to get a new fuel cell bladder for a csx8000 series car. Thanks

You could always phone the sales department at Shelby American, 702-942-7325, with your CSX number and have them look up which bladder was originally installed during the build of this contination Cobra.

I believe Fuel Safe is typically what the CSX4000/8000 cars came with when first built.

CSX8000 is a 289 continuation.

Sorry that I was not clear enough so as for you to miss my point that Fuel Safe brand was used on both CSX4000 and CSX8000 continuation Cobra's.

Do the cars come from Kirkham with the fuel cells installed or is it something SA changes/adds?
That might be another source.

Sorry for the 289/427 mixup - it's hard to tell the players without a scorecard.

Keep in mind that the building of Continuation Cobra's by SAI has constantly changed throughout the years so the build process from 1997 will be different than the build process used in 2007 or 2017 but in my expereience any SAI installed bladders will have the certification paperwork from FuelSafe in the individual Cobra build file which is why I suggested calling SAI' sales department and asking them to pull your specific CSX file as to provide the owner with details. Seems the easiest way to me.

And cool Cobra model chart. Thanks for posting that as I've not seen it before. SAI would be doing a great service if they hung a large copy of that chart in their Heritage center.

Fuel safe has you send in your old fuel cell to them to guarantee a fit I assume. Given that they require to have your old fuel cell anyway I doubt any additional paperwork from Shelby would be helpful or what am I missing?

I snapped that at the Cobra Experience in CA. I'd love to see production numbers of the various cars on the chart. I doubt SA would post it they are living on people thinking there are only two choices 289 or 427.
I know they've (SA & Ford) have produced well over 100,000 Shelby GT, GT350 and GT500 since the reintroduction. So much for rarity.
Approximately 62,126 Ford Shelby GT500
Approximately 23,574 modern Shelby GT350 and GT350R - highest-production Shelby Mustang in history.
At least 17,736 Mustangs were modified by SA in Nevada - plus those that people sent in for post title mods. Also a few hundred MachE were built 100 went to Hertz and most of the rest to Europe.

Yes sending in what you have assures a good fit. A friend had a H sport racer he made the outer shell and they made the cell to fit. Being they made these as a production item they probably have the specs. Once the cell is out of the car it probably has a part number or some spec so they can pull their file to make a new one avoiding the expense of shipping the old one.

Thanks everyone, we pulled the bladder sent the tank and pieces to a custom race shop, and they built us an entire tank from scratch, test fit it and it was perfect. This was a very early car being number 22 so couldn't find much info on the bladder itself. Thanks again

Bob, I do not believe you are missing anything. I was under the impression that the OP did not know the bladder manufacturer nor any of the specifications of the bladder which is why I suggested he have SAI look up those details for him.

Did not know that fuel safe requires they do the bladder installation, shipping the fuel cell to and from isn't the cheapest thing but I suppose it falls under a maintenance expense for the owner.
