Hi all,
Here are some images of a recent extraction from a owner that put the car down in 1974 and never finished. The car is being re-assembled to return back to the California DMV to have the car inspected and a new title issued. The CA DMV said they would not issue the title to an incomplete car. The below images are from a few weeks ago at the prior owner's shop.
Enjoy

Hi All,
The car has been shipped and received and is going back together. See images below. It is a very solid car. The tilt steering column is from a 1967 Cougar. Notice 428 markings on rear valance. I am assuming a San Jose marking. The wood steering wheel is going to need some serious help. When re-assembly, the car will appear to be a survivor that has lived a rough life.
I will be getting more images this week. There is a matching date coded 428 waiting to be installed. Dave Mathews has been contacted.

Cool!
Is the car yours? By survivor, do you mean no restoration planned?

Not mine, but I think a full resto is planned. The car is just passing through a shop in my town to its new owner.

Great pictures and story. GT500 428 was Dark Moss Green. Is this in fact 428?
428 on the rear valence was most likely just a coincidence as San Jose usually wrote 3 digit rotation numbers somewhere on the valence.

+1 Just the second (but still cool to find) rotation number assigned to that Mustang body on the line at San Jose during the second half of assembly. WOuld have been thousands of cars with the same rotation numbers - different time periods - but this one just happened to line up well their the car.
Not sure why DMV was so picky this time. Might have been able to get a patrol officer (PD) come by and confirm and sign the paperwork instead.
6s1640,
Neat car! It looks like an amazing find with little to no rust.
I have this '67 GT500 in my photo files in a completed built state, unrestored, and listed as recently sold. There is a link from an ad with more photos and info, but don't want to spoil your fun if you're planning to share more info. The VIN # is in the mid 500's and there is a Marti report. Let me know...

Are you in California? I thought you might have been from the PNW.

CHP might sign it off but you'll have to go to them - car on trailer. Check first and make sure it's not stolen - happened to a friend he pulled a car out of a guys back yard who was moving and couldn't find the pink. He dropped in a motor took it to DMV and they promptly impounded the car. Way was the title surrendered? I'd not want to get a salvage/rebuilt branded title.

Haven't had to do one for a while. Use to be able to just have one of the officers stop by off duty if you know any. Often there are a car guy or two on the force. Couple of officers locally have Shelby's. Plenty of other things we could discuss but this thread is not the place and those comments are not (at least appears not) to be related to this vehicle. Some have been discussed in other threads

Jeff, this was very common practice for an off-duty officer to do the verification. The DMV is an over-reaching bureaucracy and like almost everything else California it is about taxes and fees. There are many like-minded officers who are car guys.
After reviewing the photos from the website, I noticed the Shelby VIN stamped inside the inner door jam on the driver's side. Is this normal? Seems like it would take too much time to do at the factory, but I don't know.
I have seen it stamped around the shock mount on top of the shock towers on other cars too.
Hi Brian,
For some reason the state of California felt the need to stamp there with a "C" prefix, I am assuming for California. It is not a San Jose or SAI thing.
Good eye

Noticed that also but have never seen that on another San Jose built Shelby or Mustang and I've seen tens of thousands. Not a practice I've seen on any other car restamped by the state of California. Now the thing I would check is to see if the factory VIN is under the tag and fender to see fi there was a purpose for adding the stamp or if the owner had done it for their own purposes
As for the top of the shock towers same comment - for San Jose but have seen what appeared to be a VIN placed on an early non-San Jose car but that would not relate to 67 nor San Jose
Hi Jeff,
I have inspected the car and it does have the factory Ford VIN stampings. It is a mystery why the state of California felt the need to stamp on the door jam.

Did the owner state that he witnessed that the state did indeed stamp those there? Just asking ;)
If this is California if the vin was missing (Common on vehicles with rust or collision damage in the front) the state would stamp an aluminum VIN tag and rivet it to the front apron, usually on the left.

First must state that this is not directed toward the car in the thread but to the process Calif used. With that said it appears (what I found in documentation) that the practice of issuing a plate by the state started in 1974 now I guess a car that had been processed prior to that might have likely been updated by the state if ownership was transfered after that date and the car was reinspected.

Hi Jeff, I am only repeating the story I heard. So it is strictly hearsay. It is only conjecture as to why California stamped the VIN in the door jam.

Just checking since we have to be so careful at what we say and imply as so many take every word posted down and sometimes use it to their own ends or interpret things for their benefit
Hi Jeff,
I do know that the car was cleared through the 67 registrar. Base on the feedback, I am hearing everything checked out correctly. If the door jam stamping bothers the new owner, he can cover up and make go away. Who ever stamped, they sure banged up the door jam.

Does anyone know what the ask was on the car? Marked sold. Just curious.
I own #00503, produced on Jan 9, (my birthday) two days prior to this car's birthday of Jan 11.
