Ok, I'm finding steering wheels covers, allegedly OEM, but they're over $100. Has anybody found a modern equivalent?

These are a bit more but they look much better than the design of the modern ones. Bought one for my '69 and it looks great on the car.

Both ebay auctions mentioned have the wrong texture compared to original but ether would be a viable alternative IMO. Most would not notice the difference. The original had more smooth space between grain texture. Sorry no picture. Which ever one you choose be sure that it will fit a 15" wheel.

$100 seems like a "no-brainer" for a correct part.  Probably the cheapest correct part you'll find for a Shelby.

The "grain" used on the 500 Sports Grip changed over the decades from almost a pebble finish to a grainier "camera" finish later. Plus the pattern of the vents changed also. Just depends on what you can find and how close you want to be for your needs and car.

Here is a close up of a C8WY-3L600-A

And a slightly later version of the 500 Sports Grip
(https://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/gallery/19/6-120923155017-194062171.jpeg)

You can use some of the ebay ads to see how later ones as really grainy look to them.

Not sure what the $100 one you were offered looks like but if its the ones we typically see I don't think its out of line compared to the ones I've sold over the years. Good luck with your choice and hope this helps

Another EPay one. With all the various pictures I'm unsure which one you would get if you purchased it. Multiple versions shown ::)

The only REAL aosmith nos one i ever saw was 1 i got that came from the plant long ago. The nos service ones i had were a c8wy 68 cougar dan gurney special edition car as they used the cover before 69 shelby but not sure if it was the exact same sport grip 500 since the  ford c8wy ones i had never said sport grip 500. I sent 2 used originals out over the years to have remade and never got them back. I tracked down the original company back years ago but the owner wasnt interested in making the OLD style.

The XR7-G Cougars got the steering wheel wrap. Having two Dan Gurney associated models at the same time is confusing but the wrap wasn't a part of the Dan Gurney Special package.

Here is a detail shot from a piece of dealer literature. This car is a prototype.

I have always heard that the Gs came with the Sport Grip 500 steering wheel wraps but I can't say for sure that I have actually ever seen it spelled out in any of the documents I have.

It very well could be - I'd have to go back and double check.

Well i would think the wrap would be the same since the xr7 g was built at aosmith plant with the shelbys for  the G stood for Gurney.

Says sport grip and not 68 steering wheel photo also shows strap tying together at 3 0clock position and the original 69 shelbys i seen were tied together at 6 oclock position.

The Cougar picture in post #19 shows a grain texture more like what I remember from back in the day. It is more smooth between the graining.

Yes that is the way I remember them . More smooth between the minimal graining.

Beware, the individual selling the wraps for around $100, may not send you the wrap shown in the auctions.  I purchased one from him and a different one showed up.  He refused to take the return.  I file a complaint with eBay and they refunded me the money and did not require me to return to seller.  The seller had a fit and disparaged everyone in Western Washington.  I have since heard from a fellow member he is not a reliable seller.  Beware.
