Title: red dyes used on fasteners.
Post by: shelbymann1970 on January 10, 2026, 01:38:36 PM
I've seen discussions before but not sure if here or other places but a search here doesn't come up with answers. I got the "see through" red Dykem lay out die. Now its been discussed about the opaque red die like I see on so many fasteners that AMK sells. So  is the first pic the die layout ink? Then the next 3 pics an opaque stain? I thought I read where the opaque was used on  certain finishes because of the plating?  The link is to a Dykem opaque staining color. Thanks in advance. Gary

The finish look can be different depending on the dye uderlaying finish . A example is the dye over a zinc phosphate nut looks different (dull) compared to one with zinc silver . zinc dichromate gold has a different yet look.

Thanks Bob. I remember that, So are you using the same dye over every fastener that gets the red safely coating? I have used only the red layout dye but do you use the opaque on finishes that the "clear red dye" won't take to"? I  think phospate was an issue? Thanks, Gary

I use it over all the finish's mentioned when appropriate. Yes zinc phosphate can be hard to take the dye and may take multiple coats .

Bob, to be clear when you say you use it over multiple finishes are referring to the red layout dye or the opaque staining color.thanks as always. Gary
