any ideas what the E in the casting stands for ? in same location where 289 / 302 would be

Arnt these the early small chamber casting for the 289 engine, often found in 1965-66 models?
But the date casting is 8G23
so the 8G23 indicates the part was cast on July 23, 1968 (or potentially 1978)
the "E" in a Ford casting number generally indicates that the part belongs to the Engine engineering division
Hey Phil,
Since it's a 69 302 head, according to Bob Mannel's book, that E is just the suffix to the whole casting number (C9OE-E). Hope this helps.

Some remedial education may be needed.........

C90E: C9 = 1969 / -O = Fairlane (1962-68, Torino (1969-76), LTD II (1977-79), LN7 (1982-83) / E = Engine part
6049 = Part number for cylinder heads
E suffix = the 5th change level of that head.
