Title: Starter solenoid
Post by: cob428 on November 19, 2025, 09:30:32 AM
Bought this about 30 years ago, is this a  correct starter solenoid for 69 gt 500 built in June. Attached picture shows some type of wedge or "T" between both posts, others I have seen do not have this.

Looks like one of the ones they sold as a rebuilt- replacement-reproduction at one time.

Another detail is that when they put it together (main body and base) the rivets were installed backwards from what originals were.

Here are a couple showing the two versions I've found of original flat style for comparison

My first thought is that they used a original mounting plate and riveted on a new style body (I think started in mid 70's on) to complete the look. The later style has a variety of differences so it isn't worth spending any time on them like reversing the rivets which is easy to do but will not help the look IMO.

You will notice or run across a number of versions. During 69 production the base of the main body had straight edges while later AUTOLITE marked ones had scalloped edges between the rivets. There were also Motorcraft versions (later) that had a mix of scalloped and straight. All depends on how correct you want to be or if showing how much of a deduction your planning on. The later Motorcraft ones I've seen continue to have at least some scalloped edges on the base.

Difference between original (on left) version and a later (on right) one below

Good luck with your search - at least your not looking for a C7 marked flat version

Any idea what is the best one to use or from where until I find an original one? I have seen them listed from 170 to 550 on ebay.

Those were made from my originals i sent to chris brown years ago and are a good copy problem is somebody was stamping wrong dates as these were made in batches and i have had 100 or so over the years even some out of dearborn plant and sold and used them up and rebuilt many but originals are getting hard to find now days so thats why we made them. The oldest one i found was late nov 68 c7af flat type so maybe some started showing up in late dec but for sure in jan 69 then march 69 c9af stated showing up as i kept track of all date codes over the years and gave the list to chris but some people had date codes wrong. These were called heavy duty as people seen them on b9 s and shelbys but they are just a different vendor type like trico went to anco wiper blades in 69 dearborn. I have found these autolites  on 6 cyl and 69 1/2 mavericks 70 torinos pick-ups etc. In 72 ford used them on some vehicles marked motorcraft d2af as i have had to use them switches to rivet on autolte flat plates when they got broke or didnt work and got a box full of donor parts if someone wants to rebuild some.

I think David Davis  https://www.dsdrestoration.com/  was rebuilding them at one time.

Glad you mentioned that, both solrnoids are essential the same.

Conducting current through different terminal position's.

Now the brownish colored starter solenoids do have magical powers and are much superior to these....that will be on another topic of interest
