I have a used 4 speed shift knob. I know it will fit 68-70 4 speed cars but is correct for 69-70 Shelby's. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is an original Ford part or is it a reproduction piece. The threaded insert in the back of it is steel. I have attached a few pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I believe that's a reproduction unit. Originals have a chrome-like border. Here's what I have:

I'm with you +1
Repo as the service replacement dont have the groove cut in.
Quote from: Bob Gaines on October 22, 2025, 10:38:12 PMNot a reproduction but a later service replacement not like assemblyline. No wait you said it had a steel insert in your text. On reviewing the pictures after reading Ed's post I went back and reviewed all of the pictures . Your picture shows brass. I based my opinion on the steel insert as that is a known tell for all originals that I am aware of and didn't look closely at the pictures. Yes a repro. That will teach me to thoroughly look at all the pictures next time and not depend totally on the text.
Don't mean to hijack this thread but which knob would be considered correct for a 1969 GT500. The one in this thread or this one.

The all woodgrain one
Thanks! ;D

While you are correct to some extent the last service Ford part had a silver border and I believe that is what Drake copied. This one here has the brass insert and isn't raised. The repos also "flash" different on the blue stripe if you take a pic. There is also an earlier 68 "flat 3 knob" that doesn't have the ring indention on the woodgrain.

I thought I've seen the last service parts with the silver ring and the groove cut in it.

Yes it would. I got one on my car while my NOS one I got from Jim Cowles is put away. I bought mine from Nate Jones as Ed had them made up I believe. Also I've found a June built GT500 FB that came from the factory with a blue stripe knob.
I also have an early repop that has the chrome ring around it but no groove and I think steel threads. I was buying all variances I could find off of Ebay in the 2000s.

I have seen a number of unmolested 69 Shelby's with the typical 69 racing stripe knob. It is more the exception then the rule IMO. The all woodgrain knob is what is meant to be in the 69/70 Shelby given it is even illustrated in the owners manual.
Have only seen a couple that appeared that they were sold with the Mustang version. Likely or possibly a small number of them were stolen - during transport or while at dealership. One possible reason for finding them on a car IMO
Ford should have used the blue stripe knob as it matches the 69 shelby side stripe and that why guys used or changed them out as back in the 80s most 69 shelbys had blue stripe knobs and they were still available from ford. I know shelby tried to change many things over from mustangs to be different but he should have used the blue stripe knob as it just looks like the racing look even in that junk ford shifter.
Oh Ed, that would not look right in a purple car!

Back in 2009 I bought a blue stripe knob off of #2917( Vinny and I narrowed the car down). The son of the original owner pulled the shift know off right before it was stolen and never found 6 months after purchase. The dad kept the shift knob as a memento and the mother gave it to her son after his father died. June built so Ford was making the mistake still. Well for them being there because of theft Ed has a letter from AO Smith citing the wrong shift knobs being installed on cars in a memo to Ford in 1969.

Gary , Yes the all wood grain know is correct . I guess you didn't read my post saying that the all wood grain knob was what was meant to be in the 69/70 Shelby given it is illustrated as such in the owners manual. ;)
