Title: Paint thickness meters
Post by: SCOTTGTK on August 25, 2025, 06:08:39 AM
Good am, does anyone have experience/recommendations for a paint thickness meter? Not looking to break the bank, just something reliable, easy to use. Thank you.

Simple and easy to use, I've had one for 40 years

Digital wise, I have no experience

Thanks Bill.... It's been helpful to you when determing if a repair has been "hidden" Scott

More to find bodywork (rust, bondo, etc) itself then to see if the car had actual paint work done.
Digital wise, as seen on BAT, you can find a decent unit for under $100, I have no experience with those, but have reviewed several online such as this one on Amazon:

or
https://www.amazon.com/Thickness-Automotive-Backlight-Resolution-Calibration/dp/B08CRGMDSG

Just keep in mind this style only works on metal, there are others out there for use on cars like the Corvette for instance, but they start above $650.

PS: My original I got from Eastwood back in the 80's at a Carlisle event, think I paid $5.95 for it at that time.

Thanka again... that's the purpose I had in mind...seeing if bonds was covering up more than it should.
I like the $5.95!

Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Thickness-Detector-Crash-Test-Resistant-Shopping/dp/B086HJHKTQ?th=1

$13.99 with free shipping

This is the equivalent of the $5.95 I spent in the 80's

Add this and you are fully covered:
